Are newsrooms still necessary?
As technology makes it increasingly easier for journalists to work remotely, more and more editors are equipping mobile journalists, or “mojos,” with the tools to work exclusively outside the newsroom, recording, shooting and writing stories … some even from their cars.
While mobile journalists can fill a demand for more web content and faster deadlines, some editors argue that journalists need the exchange of ideas and editorial oversight that only a newsroom can provide.
What do you think? Even if we are technologically at a place where newsrooms are unnecessary, are the pluses of the newsroom atmosphere too important to lose?

Newsroom is Forever
One of my colleagues switches to online writing for his own website. Like other fly-by-night newspapers it closed. Why? He did the gathering of news, writing, editing, layouting, marketing, etc.
Say, all involve in the publication individually use their own laptop to produce a newspaper without newsroom, will the paper comes out on time? Ok the reporters send in their stories on time, will those stories no longer be edited before encoding into the newspaper page?
Newsroom is forever as long as there are journalist. Newsroom is a necessity to produce quality and credible news. Especially, in the Eastern Visayas region, Philippines, where communication facility is not as wide as in advanced countries. Reporters cannot own a laptop and wireless connection, because it is expensive which the publisher cannot afford to provide. They have to sent it through Internet Cafe, pay the use of the computer.
I believe if newsroom will be gone, journalist has also to go. I am an opinion writer for Leyte Samar Daily Express (http://leytesamardaily.net/category/opinion/ormoc-upside-down/) and submitting the article through email, which is convenient for me, but news article beating the deadline has to be submitted personally to answer the editor's query.
Hence, newsroom is forever.
Sorry I don't have specimen signature to affix in the internet.
yes the newsrooms are still necessary.
in as much advancement in technology can strengthen the processes of news gathering and production, it cannot take away the importance and the role of the newsroom. Not manyJournalists in most developing economies cannot afford the cost of media technology and internet connectivity. In some areas there is limited and minimum national internet coverage, so, one can imagine the cost of internet modems, subscription, smartphones, laptops and PCs. The newsroom also bonds journalists in so many ways, including, sharing of ideas, socio-economic needs, etc.

Newsroom is important so far
Newsroom is important so far as it creates this enthusiasm to cope with the deadlines and besides being with collegues soften the pressure of having to cope with the pressure of submitting the articles with the final touch to the editor.. I wish that the international centre puts online an international newsroom enabling all past and present journalists to make reporting and to be together. It will be a memory share.Let all journalists get together and stand united for our one and only press room, the international centre. As an ex journalist, I miss this experience and I am hungry to be what I am, a journalist that I shall always remain, no matter that I had only 4 years experience as a journalist i in an island in the indian ocean.I congratulate myself for I have saved this island from illegal pratice of abortions which have not been done in a good hygienic conditions .I am craving to be what I am, so the world of journalism is my world who understands me. Hello, This is
Hello, This is really a serious issue. I believe that Editor like me need a news room.At least people like us who are still unequiped with modern facilities due to infractural lake in this developing world. While without discussing the issue face to face with my reporter,we can not publish a good story with full confidence.Journalism is not machenical and it is very much a tool for the society to do for the betterment. So newsroom is really important. For publication, discussion is most important;otherwise we will be like lonely island regards

Running a news
Running a news organisation without a newsroom is like executing a war without a command base. No matter the level of sophistication of the weapons in the arsenal of your troops, you cannot do away with your command headquarters where planning and strategizing take place. Technology has revolutionised the practice of journalism around the world, making news gathering and news production faster and a lot easier, but I see the newsroom remaining with us for a long time to come. Let media houses in developing countries acquire these modern tools. Let them even have their own 'mojos' especially in conflict situations where it is didfficult or even impossible to keep a newsroom, but let the newsroom remain for it is the engine room of news.

It's good we are in possession of technology tools. But as a journalist needs to improve and make better stories, the face to face interaction with his/her editor, even with their fellow workmates is unreplaceable.
I think the new
I think the newsroom is still important because it provides editors with the opportunity to oversee the work of young journalists and add a comment or two that can greatly improve their output. If newsrooms are purged out of existence, we would not only be sacrificing the quality of news thart is produced but also a platform that promotes team work and solidarity among journlists. If reporters do not receive advice and coaching from their editors, they would not get it any where. From Bernice Agyekwena, Ghana
In my view, imp
In my view, importance of newsrooms can't be denied if large scale, mass media is to work. I work for a large broadcasting organization in Pakistan where editors work in a central news room 24/7 and feed news stories to various bulletins. As the organization is large with the whole country as client audience, this is not possible if the editors are working remotely without being aware of the policy and different developments happening.
However, for small scale organizations or individual journalists it is better to work alone or remotely in order to cut costs and bureaucratic hurdles.

Newsrooms are still necessay. In spite of the demand for "mojos", news organs and news houses still need newsrooms. If not, where are editorial conferences held, where are polices drawn and where does internal training take place?
I believe the p
I believe the physical contact in newsrooms cannot be replaced. It is an, essential part of my job to have the roudy , chat and exchanges of view that we we experience in the newsroom. No didgital device can replace this.
Journalism is n
Journalism is nothing but team work. News gathering, newspaper production cannot be one man's or one woman's job! Newsroom is a great place for ideas. It provides good chances to improve the copy. I am a journalist with an experience of 27 long years and newsroom has immensely contributed to my growth. I cherish the lively debates of our newsrooms. Since 1990 journalists in India are working on computers but they are still empowered by newsroom atmosphere. As editor of a newspaper, I strongly favour a newsroom.
Newsroom is sti
Newsroom is still necessary, but like I argued in one of my contributions to a similar discussion last year, a modern newsroom is shrinking in size. With due apology to unionists, a modern newsroom requires a few sub-editors, a networking manager and the editor. However, in some developing countries like my country, Nigeria, where many people do not have access to computer let alone wireless Internet facilities, conventional newsroom has no alternative for now.
Yes, newsrooms
Yes, newsrooms are still necessary because as you know journalism is a team work. It is in the newsroom where many journalism activities are conducted. For example though technology has advanced none can conduct a postmortem meeting via internet, phone, messengers... there is a need of having a place to discuss on the last publications. If we can take an example of a newspaper, there is a moment wherein the chiefs ( Editors) meet together to discuss on which story can be put on the front page or which article can make the leading story: they have to deliberate and they are thus obliged to sit together in a certain place (newsroom). The newsroom is still very much necessary since it may be called the "headquarter" of journalism. All professioners must have a place "home". The newsroom has many departments such as editorial, advertising, production, financial... even though some operations can be done electronically there are some which obliges the physical interaction among the practitioners. However, technology can facilitate reporting and editing without killing the need of having a newsroom. According to my view point, it is necessary to have a newsroom taking into account that journalism is an ongoing learning profession whereby journalists by being together in a specific place they can continue teaching oneanother through exchanging ideas on certain issues. It is thus in a newsroom where journalist may get more experience concerning reporting and editing since they may learn from others. In developing countries, the newsroom is very important since it is where journalists find computers since it is very hard for them to get their personal computers connected to the internet. The newsroom in our country (Burundi) for example is everything in as far as reporting, editing are concerned. In our developing countries of Africa journalism is not yet developed. Even journalists are not rich enough so that they be able to buy a computor (labtops) or a mobile phone and its recharging vouchers so it is very difficult to say that in Africa, Burundi in particular newsroom are not necessary. The concept of
The concept of mojos is too alien a concept for the developing world, where journalists still continue to slog under sub-human conditions to file their stories. However, if the basic infrastructure were present, working as a mojo would save a lot of time and money for organisations as well as professionals. Where comparing notes is concerned, conference facilities could do the rest.
I strongly beli
I strongly believe the newsrooms are necessary and will remain necessary so long as newspapers remain around. Techinology is simply making our work as journalists easier in terms of communication and research. Specialized writers (columnists etc) can do without newsrooms because there is little added to their articles in the newsrooms. However, other journalists- general and investigative reporters need the newsroom to discuss with editors/journalists news angles, best intros and to compare notice since most big stories require more than one journalist. Since newspapers are competing with radio, TV, internet and mobile phones in providing information; we can only remain relevant IF we can meet in one place (newsroom) to discuss angles/ideas that can make newspaper stories look different from other platforms. REgards, Geoffrey Kulubya Editor, Buedde newspaper Uganda
Adding a couple
Adding a couple of mojo's is quite useful but some editing still needs to be done in newsroom later on.

I totally agree
I totally agree this concept raise the question but it is almost like building a house in the air, in the context of my country Nepal. Many people even journalists in Nepal have been facing different kinds of problem here so the issue of internet is an expensive part of technology here.
If we sit in front of any cyber café for an hour here, we have to waste half of that time waiting for web pages' opening. I mean the internet in Nepal is with very slow of speed. It is not only the matter of slow internet speed; the fare of internet is also out of Nepalese capacity where latest per capita income is $470.
No media office in Nepal could afford a laptop, cell phone and 24 hour internet to its each and every reporter. I would be happy if such environment that media without newsroom comes and equally hopeful over that kind of environment in the future as an online editor and print reporter.

The newsroom is
The newsroom is important not only for sharing views and experiences but a basic requirement for collecting all the news stories at one place to go through and edit them before placing them in newspaper pages. It is good that mojos are equipped well but they have to send their stories from where they are to the editors/news editors who would decide the fate of their stories.

The newsroom is
The newsroom is very important and will never cease to be an important part of Journalism in every journalists carreer. Almots all the senior journalists have passed through newsrooms and they are what they are to a large extent because they went through a newsroom. Why should we deny this golden chance to young and upcoming reporters? A newsroom is a platform of sharing ideas and get other people's insights. I might have an idea but i may not be the best person to execute the task but i can share more thoughts about my idea and give it to some else and vise versa. Working from home or wherever you are and send or edit stories is ok but not at the expense of dicarding the neswroom. Technology just comes to add to the existing operations, it does not mean we should get rid of existing pratices even if they are good.

In the firs respond you can say yes: newsrooms are vary important; but know in the new area of cyber journalism and new space for teleworking, I think that being in the newsroom isn't necessary! For instance, you can be in your home and with your PC send stories! We are in global village that you can have close communication with anybody. We as a correspondent should use this opportunity! Then I think we should go to the environments and send alive report from there!
If a work that
If a work that can be done by two people in the newsroom can be done by same people in a car on the spot of news gathering, why shall we cling to newsrooms? on-the-spot news editng and reporting is better and saves alot of time. It eases stress as well!
even though, no
even though, no one can argue news-room meeting with several heads is the best to have the best reporting,
if ur news are from cyclone hit area and other parts of Burma that's locked by military junta and broadcasting radio and tv stories from Europe to Burmese audience, some undercover reporters in Burma have to try so hard through internet, messengers and some chat-clients, to talk about stories with news team in Thailand and Norway, about file transferring through internet means, while the main station is based in Norway, main branch one is in Thailand, another branch in India, some stringers in USA, Europe, china, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, etc; working with limited capacities,
the newsroom meetings through several modern technology tools, such as email, chat, messengers, video call, voip telephony system and FTP file transferring from different time zones of the world come to exit as an alternative one.
i think.
The Newsroom is
The Newsroom is a market place of ideas. When we sit around that table at editorial meetings, we are not just planning our news day, but more importantly we are empowering our journalists to deliver our plan. Technology is good but individualising the stories limits perspectives. This is why there is no replacing the newsroom.
I am of the can
I am of the candid opinion that inspite of modern technology, the newsroom remains a home away from home. Also of importance, newsgathering is a team work and as such, more flavor would be added to the dissemination of news under the spirit of critique as is found in most newsrooms across the world. Technology cannot provide the extra momentum needed to enrich a fresh news in the presence of all the operatives......Liberia
