Are women in your region interested in the news?

For the past two decades, British news editors have been puzzled by the lagging number of women reading daily newspapers – measured at 41% of women in the period October 2007 to March 2008, according to Editors Weblog. A few years ago, Peter Preston of the Guardian newspaper asked, "Where have all the women gone?"

In response, targeted advertising and marketing campaigns have attempted to lure female readers, as has “female-friendly” content, according to British copy-editor Andrew Higton. Papers also have “attempt[ed] to make [news] more visually appealing to the female market,” according to Editors Weblog.

In your opinion, are female readers in your country as interested in the news as men? If not, do you think news organizations should make concerted efforts to appeal to female readers? What would such efforts entail?

It is indeed amazing to see

It is indeed amazing to see that women are not so interested in news . Following up my personal observation, the conversation of women is rarely centred on news for they are always anxious about material things, for instance buying a house, caring for their kids or work all the time that they have really little time to see the world. From the 10 percent of unemployed women in France, some who want deliberately to stay at home to breed their children, five percent will discuss news especially when it comes to their interest, for instance the high cost of life or the increase of medical expenses and one might think that they are interested not in the news itself, let alone be it local news but merely because certain aspects of these pieces of information do affect their lives regarding security or increase of expenses. Among the working class in France as well women don't have time to focuss on news as they are like robots as this saying proverb"metro, boulot, dodo" which means that their lives are based on taking the metro or train to go to work then back home to sleep. If there is no social life because of work, there will surely not have room for discussion about the world. The news is not what is happening in our country but in the world. The day, women say they are interested in news , would mean that they are concerned of what is going on around the world. But this day is not going to happen since european women live in a world of robots and are becoming computors with just one aim: their own life, let it be material or personal. Pity that the european world has no time to care for others and is blind and deaf to news. Nazma FOURRE

In Somali women they interest

In Somali women they interest in news, why this comes , because since our country has undergone civil war for many years, then not only women but every member of the society even the children adopt listening the news. Women are the victims of the war so that is why they become familiar in interesting news. You can see women who are buying newspapers and then reading, you can also see a woman who is listening to the BBC Somali Section, so women and the news are very close friends here in Somaliland/ Somalia.

No women appear to be

No women appear to be interested in news as such. It is an issue which must be investigated. I have a feeling may be they are too choosy and self-centered. Media will be deemed a useful tool the day they read news and watch news. Please find out.

Hi.I'm here onl

Hi.I'm here only the person from Bangladesh who expressing this interesting issue encauraging women in News and Media.Though for the lower percantage of literacy many of women/females are not familiar and disable to keep their performances in this sector. But if we had sufficient opportunity and technical initiatives to teach and learn journalism and other media related programs as like vocational/trading certification options for the females could have better milestone acts in the media sectors. From my organizations have such plans and initiatives and if we get our global/foreign supporters/donora to implementations would establish a big role.

Any advice, sugestions or supports are welcomed on this purposes.

In Pakistan med

In Pakistan media play a key role to aware women about their rights and all daily happenings in their region, state and than all over the world. It is fact that women are intrested in news as well as their issues.I belongs with a pakistan's largest circulated daily and also supervising a women weekly magzine published on every sunday with our daily newspaper.I feel and i saw that now women are too much intrested in all issues which raised on daily basis in our society. In Pakistan many women journalists are also working.Briefly you can say that in pakistan women are going with men in same direction, weither the gender discrimnation is also accure here still.

Am a Ugandan fe

Am a Ugandan female journalist [Radio/Print.] Not as m any women as men read News papers. even if it were Radio, they are not so much bothered. when i was News Editor with a Radio station, there was a deliberate campaign to have female voices or female sound bytes, but also getting them was troublesome. the women would refuse. but i think the idea of making the news items female friendly can work.

I don't see man

I don't see many women reading news papers...it's usually men that i see carrying around news papers. The reason why? I think most print medias don't write much about women for that matter. The solution in my opinion is to entertain more about women without being gender biased.

Despite the ver

Despite the very vibrant media industry in my country Nigeria,it is disheartening to note that women are not as interested in hardcore news as much as the men.Worse still,in the industry,a large percentage of the femalefolk tend to tilt towards softer stuff.Start a debate on a current issue and most have little input, even as a reader,a vendor first presents the gossip rags to a lady before a request is made.I believe that if some hardcorestories are reported from a more humanangle perspective it could attract more women readers or viewers.

There is absolu

There is absolutely no discrimination against women within the literate segment of Cameroonian society. In some cases, women read more newspapers than men and since they earn the same wages for the same work done like men, there is no difference between men and women in Cameroon. Since the reintroduction of multipartyism in Cameroon eighteen years ago, the number of female journalists has risen in proportion more than that of males and in some cases, women have excelled more than their male counterparts. I have been a newspaper editor for about thirty years uninterrupted and have had to guide many young emerging media practitioners, and I must say I am impressed by the impact the women have been making on the fourth estate in Cameroon.

The attitude of

The attitude of women to reading News iteme no doubt is disheartening. Most of the time you expect your Female counterparts to demonstrate such burning desire for the latest development trhough the Newspaper or the other Media and you discover that most of them do not posses the fire.In Nigeria this attitude by Women is very common especially to the Hard News Publications. It will however be discovered that Women by nature love Gossiping hence the most appealing approach is through Soft sells with illustrations that could be sensationalised. It is more of a psychological challenge that could easily be overcome through strategic solution

Women in my cou

Women in my country, Liberia, do not read the news as compare to the number of men that read and listen to news.

In my opinion, this is because women are not encourage to participate in politics, debates etc.. as men do.

Women, in my country are regarded as people who take care of domestics work instead of debating with men in public gathering.

Female journalists are meanwhile encourage by their male counterparts to engaged in aggressive reporting.

I think, in order for women to be encourage in reading and listening to news, media institutions should focus on reporting human interest stories than the usual news stories.

Uganda media in

Uganda media in most cases give women negative coverage which in turn dis courages female readers always. Nude pictures for example.

Women in Nigeri

Women in Nigeria do not participate in Journalism as much as the men, due principally to the fact that the process of obtaining factual information in Nigeria, like in most third world countries can be very rigorous.

Another reason is the fact that Journalism practice in this part of the world is still largely a risky endervour.

If the freedom of information bill(FOB) pending in the Nigerian parliament is passed into law, making the process of obtaining factual information, less rigorous and if the risks associated with journalism is reduced considerably through civil rights campaigns, women to my opinion, especially in third world countries will embrace the profession like their male counterparts.

Infact it so wo

Infact it so worring that women in my country are not interested in the news.Men are domineering in all spheres of socio-economic,cultural and political life and they control over 95 percent of the nations wealth. Take the case of women as ministers, there are only three female ministers, the number is very insignificant and in politics men dominate.Of the over 200 political parties or so in Cameroon, non is headed by a woman. Again the marginalization of the women counts for this coupled with poverty, low literacy level. I run a critical programme called 20/20 over the Ocean City Radio in the town of Kumba,in the southwest province and during my survey I noticed that more men listened to this programme than women and several women complained that they lack the money to purchase a small FM radio. They said their husbands monopolises the house radio. Also we usually have more male callers during the programme. When I donated a few hand FM radios to some market women we noticed that more women participated during the programme. From our investigation we also noticed that more women were buying FM radios to listen to the news. The Ocean City radio is private radio station. Njaru Philip Journalist,Cameroon
