Journalists association do help us not only defending our rights but also enhancing our skills, being a member of Executive Committee of Association of Television Journalists, Pakistan. I can confirm that associations in Pakistan are playing their part in improving standards of Journalism in Pakistan, particularly - Television Journalism.

I think Journalist Association should be first to protect the profession by ensuring that Journalists respect strictly the norms and ethics of the profession, and then to assist Journalists in oursueing thier career through training, defense and support. This is not just the Case with the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists where I am a registered member. The Association has organised a few training events since its creation thanks to some benevolent individuals and embassies, but members do not fulfil their constitutional and financial obligations and the Association has NEVER intervened in one instance where a member is victimised. Lastly the Association failed to elect a new executive because members failed to meet some basic constitutional requirements. Other Journalists Associations in Cameroon exist to serve the interest of their executive members only.

am tv journalist for astro awani from indonesia, i think all profession organization purposed to give highest benefit for its members, beside skill enhance purposed journalist association also give protection at least moral support. when we are in hostile zone, i think journalist must be at least member one of journalist association to monitor and protect them in sticky situation , about 2002 i had trouble with indonesiaan police regarding to story i covered. then i have to face legal action from the police and at that time i was support only from journalist association that i follow ,

Journalist Asssociations, I think, are doing a lot to keep up the spirit of professionals in the media. I am an investigative journalist who has gone to jail four times in my efforts to expose corruption and corrupt government officials during the regime of the warlord, Charles Taylor. The Press Union of Liberia played a crucial role in getting me out of trouble. The PUL provided legal services to me through a team of lawyers in one of the cases in which I used the unorthodox means of gathering news to expose police and other government functionaries that were bent on selling goods seized from business entities for disposal either because they were contaminated or expired. That case lasted for three months; after that, I and other journalists that were accused won the case in court.

When mass communication or journalism was not offered in any universities in Liberia up to the late 80's, many Liberian journalists got their training through workshops or seminars conducted directly or indirectly by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL). If I take time to explain about the benefit of having a journalist association in my country, I will in deed fill all your pages on the Intenet. Let's think about other things to disuss because the important role of media associations in enhancing the profession especially in developing countries cannot be over-emphasized.

Associations enhance professional advancement to a certain extent. They are, for instance, effective in lobbying for enabling environment for the practice of journalism. However, i think associantions cannot be a perfect answer to the personal shortcomings such as lack of self-drive and initiative. A journalist has to liberate himself or herself first and aggressively pursue goals before expecting an association to do magic for him or her. An association can only serve as one's means to an end but cannot be an end in itself.

Some associations are also known to misuse and misdirect resources and to particularly serve only a small segment of journalists especially those who practice in the the big towns and cities. In Kenya and many other sub saharan countries journalists practicing in the rural areas are mostly forgotten though i can say they also perhaps need to mobilize and form their common front to address their unique needs.

I am a member of a local chapter of the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA).

Professional associations are supposed to be veritable training grounds for members especially in third world countries like mine where professional training institutions are rare. However, sometimes the greed and dishonesty of the individuals (s)elected to run these professional bodies negates the good intentions of these professional associations. In my country, most media professional associations hardly function effectively because of financial mismanagement. Even foreign assistance money intended to be used in financing seminars and workshops is embezzled and symposia end up being but skeletons of what they are intended to be.
