Do you have a work-life balance?
5/14/10
by Jessica Weiss
Being a journalist can be stressful, no matter where you work. Journalists often work unusual hours and have to deal with deadline pressure. And work often becomes all-consuming, so that journalists are left thinking about a story long after they've left the office.
As a journalist, do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? How do you ensure that you see friends and family, and have a life outside of work?

To the the Turkish
To the the Turkish journalist...........nope the remuneration problem is not unique to Turkey. It takes a committed journalist to stick to their guns and do this job i so love. I have stuck it out for seven years -no pr for me sorry - passionately dedicated, pay issues have sometimes nearly wrecked my life but believe me it pays off somwehere down this journey+. I have a lot of faith in where GOD places each and every human being, those dreams and desires are not a mistake. Journalism is a calling. I have always been in print, writing is how i tell the story best. You realise it is not about you, you are just the instrument to serve. A very serious career undertaking. But it gives back slowly and surely and I wouldn't trade the uncoventionality, everyday is different, meeting people from everywhere & every status, traveling to all sorts of places, keeping the most weird hours beating deadlines, lacking a social life, being misunderstood, losing jobs due to the fact you are a women, sexual harassment and the boss thinks it is money that drives your passion - NADA! being termed feminist because you believe in ethics, equality and social justice for every human being, knowing unto the last this is who you will always be no matter what. I am a woman, i am a journalist. Keep heart fellow scribes and broadcasters. Geraldine Gathoni Muraya Kenya

The job is so tasking that
The job is so tasking that even at sleep, one is thinking of one story line or the other. However, I try as much as possible to strike a balance by maintaining a schedule though very tight and making sure there is no clash.
i must say i have been
i must say i have been branded a bad mother because i rarely find time for my family and children. i report at work by 6:00am and leave at 9:00pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturday i work up to 2:00pm. i always leave my husband in bed and my child sees me only on Sunday or late night that is if she is not sleeping. no time for socializing with friends for am always tired. is there any way journalists can enjoy social life? i wonder especially in developing countries where when you talk of working in shift you are regarded lazy and the only thing that comes to the mind of the bosses is to sack you. Being a journalist is no easy
Being a journalist is no easy task. This is because it comes with the tough responsibility of being the first to draft history. It is a tough challenge but at the end of it all, there shoul be a clear separation between work and social life. Mark, Kenya.
I am deeply sad with the lost
I am deeply sad with the lost of our fellow journalist based in Bangkok shot by the Armed Forces of Thaniland. We hope that our fellow journalists worldwide should not just remained silent with the barbaric attitude of the Royal Armed Force of Thailand. This is a very cruel and uncivilised society of the Thailand government law enforcers fighting with a man with no guns to defence himself.
I know what; most of the
I know what; most of the waste things I heat in journalism are working until weekend,
Because remit me to see my friend and family too. As a journalism I used to call them or email them.

Most people don't think of
Most people don't think of journalists as first responders to a tragic event. Those of us who write the stories and take photographs are expected to push our feelings aside. But the problem is we're human. As journalists, we must focus our attention on getting information to the public that is accurate, informative and timely. Those first days of reporting and writing are now a blur. Emotionally, I was numb. I longed to grieve but the tears wouldn't come. I left the teaching profession because I wanted to write, a calling I've felt as long as I can remember. My job at the newspaper -- which has given me the opportunity to meet the people -- has also given me the responsibility of telling their stories, even when those stories are tragic. But I realized that whether we're small-town reporters or journalistic globetrotters, our job is the same. I realized, too, the sad fact that violence is happening every day, every hour, every minute. Somewhere. We has to tell the stories.

Keeping the office-family and
Keeping the office-family and friends in good humor is no easy task in case you also want to strive to be a true professional. But it is not something which is impossible, but one has to be accomodative enough to shed time, sweat and blood to accomplish that. How many of us are multi talented to do that? As a young journalist,
As a young journalist, juggling all the assignment and side hustles is both interesting and overwhelming. I am getting the hang of deadlines but at the cost of sleepless nights and no social life. The key thing to note though is discipline, sometimes i just take a deep breathe and force myself to unwind!

You give your life for this
You give your life for this job. Because you always have to think, read, learn, investigate and hand on news. This is not a huge problem for a journalist. Because every journalist adore her/his job. But when you think the salary you get, it is a handicap. I'm mentioning about Turkey. You write news on million dollars agreements, new model sports cars, luxury brands, CEO's, modern life styles etc...But you earn just enough to survive. Working as a journalist is very stressful indeed when you look from this site. What happens then? Journalists choose working for PR agencies and they become the press representatives of the brands. I'm really wondering, is this situation unique to Turkey?
This IS quite a task!
This IS quite a task! Fortunately, I've found some help recently with this very topic.
I was introduced to a book called "Your Work, Your Life...Your Way - 7 Keys to Work-Life Balance" by Julie Cohen. It explains there are 7 barriers and 7 keys to attaining such work/life harmony, and it maps out the path to do this. It's very well written and allows the reader to proceed in a way that is best for them. For instance, my big issue is with self-care, and this book details not only HOW to make it a priority, but WHY it MUST be a priority. I found it extremely helpful and I recommend it highly. Here is the link - http://www.7keystoworklifebalance.com/book/
Here's to balance and harmony! Cheers!

Great to have someone talking
Great to have someone talking about this! I actually transitioned from being a reporter to an editor because I felt editing had less stress--no running down sources or trying to create coherent sentences when I'm too tired to think. Although editing under deadline can also be stressful, it usually occurs during more reasonable hours.
