Ethics vs. the public's right to know: Where does Wikileaks stand?

When Wikileaks released 92,000 secret documents related to the U.S. war in Afghanistan on July 25, experts pointed to it as proof that the web has fundamentally changed journalism. After all, the influential story didn't come from a major news outlet, but from an Internet-savvy organization that publishes leaked material anonymously.

Wikileaks is a journalistic tool, but it does not follow the ethical principles of traditional journalism. Does this type of reporting threaten quality journalism, or does it help the public's right to know? Does the ability to disclose confidential materials give one the right to do so?

wikileaks. Justified or not?

Notwithstanding the attempt at intellectualising the decision by some to open the door on what journalists have been" filtering" and hiding from people. I think that it is correct to expose the hidden side of the coin.

Media has managed to manipulate the truth and mould it to serve it's own purposes and agenda's. News has now become a means to win support for media;s own mission. This is allowing too much of power to a supposed neutral propagator of information.

In fact, it is in everyone's interests to have more "wikileaks" type of reports aired so that a balance of opinion and fact can be achieved. Perhaps a news service can be established to serve this new and progressive purpose where the "mainstream" fail to deliver.

Journalism is not just about

Journalism is not just about disclosing information. Getting the job done also means providing context and explaining the situation so that the reader/viewer can get an informed opinion and understand the value of the information. Wikileaks doesn't do that and I don't think that just publishing the documents is a correct or even ethical use of those documents since the public was not given a full information.

Also, Wikileaks had jeopardized the security of Afghan people who collaborate with the US government. These individuals whose names have been made public, as well as their families, will now have to face the animosity of anti-US groups in their towns and villages. Some may already be dead but we will never hear about it because they're just collateral damage. That is the making of Wikileaks and that is definitely NOT ethical.

The founder of Wikileaks himself claims he is not trying to "do journalism". Still, the website also claims the right to protect the anonymity of sources.... so where exactly do they stand?

well i think there are some

well i think there are some information best kept secret. wikileak yes is quite informative but then it should be modulated

The public's right to know

The public's right to know would have a variety of viewpoints, and this is as a result of the school of thought one comes from with regards to looking at the how and what information has been used in accordance to what objectives. The people of the world have been subjected to misinformation for a very long time and one has to understand that today the free flow of information poses a serious threat to those who have had the monopoly to only let the people know what they need to know and the rest is for the privillaged to be in the limelight. The issue of ethics only apply to those who the situation is convenient at that particular time. Here, we are talking about the precious gift of all life which one only lives it once. I think putting barriers using ethics and other forms of allegiences defits the purpose of the people's right to know.

Some of the comments posted

Some of the comments posted here are very disturbing and perhaps indicative of the plummeting standards of journalism currently being practiced. They seem to allude to blindly supporting the authorities, without question, which undercuts the fundamental principles of the liberal media system and the notion of the fourth estate. One should not, and be very wary of, confusing and mixing the notions of journalism and patriotism. Such emotional and hysterical rhetoric should have no place in a professional journalistic setting.

The public do have a right to know what is going on, especially during times of conflict. I say conflict as there has been a deliberate decision not to invoke war in the Global War On Terror. It is a fundamental right for citizens to know what their political (and military) representatives are doing in their name. Citizens need to be informed with the relevant information in order to make the right decisions. To date much of the mainstream mass media have not been fulfilling this task. Political and military representatives have been permitted to lie and deceive the public without any serious challenge from the media.

A final point being, much of this information was already publicly available, if one knew where to look for it. As for the Afghani informant names that were leaked, this is a breach of protocol in writing the intelligence reports, which were being quite widely circulated before they were leaked by Wikileaks.

The Wikileaks 'revelations'

The Wikileaks 'revelations' should not come as a surprise to anyone that is not strictly following the mainstream media. Some of the comments above indicate a complete abandoning of the notion of a fourth estate in what is left of the liberal media system. There seems to be some confusion here among some of the commentators between patriotism and journalism, the two are not good bed fellows. Shall we just get in behind and support the authorities no matter what they do and how they conduct themselves ... in your name? Statements from Western political and military leaders, to be diplomatic, have been less than honest at times.

The public does have a right to know what is being done in their name. After all no war has been officially declared in practice, for a good reason. The foundation of a functioning democracy is that its citizens should be properly informed of events and people that affect their lives in order to make the appropriate and necessary decisions that are required. After all these conflicts that make up the Global War On Terror are being fought in the name of democracy and human values. Or are we moving away from this concept?

We should often be mindful

We should often be mindful that what is confidential to a government or group may be harmful to humanity. Therefore, we must appreciate time and needs to be able to fulfill social service which is the primary function of journalism. Again, traditional journalism is a genre which was begun by a philosopher-king in his own time. Therefore, like many scientific findings have been overtaken by time and new discoveries, classroom journalism teachers should realize that humanity is hungry for secrets to be able to combat many threats to life and existence. Except journalism is able to feed humanity with novel facts, we will fail in the discharge of our duties as journalists. However, it must be stressed that paying money to obtain data is unethical; and publishing a source identity without his/her approval is unethical. The anonymous source sent information to wikileaks and intended it for publication; so, what is unethical? Disclose evil whenever you find it without damage to the source. Period. whatever it is explanation, conspiracy, Journalism, ethics, unethical or Public Right. I Know one thing these documents were red with the blood of thousands of innocents. how we can think journalism is not to unveil them if some one or Organization want to open the evidences (and these are true) of his/her story then what is unethical in it. Buried among the documents is some intriguing evidence that the U.S. military in Afghanistan has adopted a PR strategy that got it into trouble in Iraq: paying local media outlets to run friendly stories: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/20100727/wl_ynews/ynews_wl3247

I think it is the right of

I think it is the right of the public to know what their government is doing in a foreign war and it is the obligation of the government to explain why they hid information like that. The U.S. attacks to civilians and their support to Pakistan despite doubts of their loyalty, are things that should rise concerns to the U.S. citizens and that damage their image in the international arena. The American public should not accept a war without being correctly informed what is happening on it.

I believe the integrity of

I believe the integrity of the State supercedes some of these supposed rights to information - there is such a thing as "classified" information and it is classified for a reason.

It was not Investigative

It was not Investigative Journalism, but SPYING by others for the sake of compromising the United States of America's security. The person(s) and Wikileaks must be held accountable - the people and the organization behind the leaked information should be looked at and investigated. Americans and professional Journalists would be deaf, dumb and liars to not know what Wikileaks has committed. This is not an age factor, not a race card, not a culture issue, or a sex orientation preference - it is SPYING.

I must state here that my

I must state here that my formative years were during World War II, when we would have taken a most dim view of activities such as Wikileaks, and dealt with them accordingly and, I might add, most sternly. Given my age and background, I will say flatly that the American Wikileaks operators did not do journalism at all, but committed an act of treason against our country; bear in mind that treason is the only crime mentioned in that quaint and outdated document known as the US Constitution. The foregoing goes beyond what I would regard as freedom of the press, and I believe that a wave of arrests, trials, and incarcerations or even hangings would be indicated.

come out of your dream world

You have been overlooking the treason being caused by the very same leaders of the countries that you mention in order to label wikileaks as treasonous. Sadly, you fail to see the injustice being done in the name of security of these countries. Why wont any of you discuss in detail how the unanswered questions regarding 911 are being ignored and swept under the "carpet"? you are a part of the problem. This is why your statements mean very little to level headed people.
