Page One ads: Do they go too far?

Advertisements on the front page of a newspaper -- "Page One" -- may be good for business, but some journalists find such ads distasteful. Page One should be reserved for top content, they say, and placing ads there blurs the ethical line that separates business from news.

What do you think about Page One ads? In an age of dwindling budgets, are they a necessary evil? Is there a way to make them unobtrusive or less distasteful?

Comment now.

In my opinion, they should

In my opinion, they should keep ads to a minimum on the first page and make it as a top prize for those wanting to advertise. And place more ads on next pages. That would ensure that they're not annoying their readers and also not annoying advertisers.

Chris

I really think that the front

I really think that the front page of the newspaper is the mirror and the first impression the paper gives to his readers or subscribers. Therefore the editor or the editorial committee has to decide what to put in the front page. And it became a matter of discussion whether or not to have an adv in the front page. If that adv will or can cover all the expenses and even the extra cost of the print, in some poor area, i will see an editor decide to have an adv in the front page. But professionally speaking its not good to have an adv in the front page, because the front age is for the headlines and sometimes to editorial point of views. An adv is an opinion and communication and not an information and therefore adv are not welcome in the front page.

The headlines matters more

The headlines matters more than the adds. Full front page ads are not very ideal has it means unjust distraction for the agencies.

If news is what a good editor

If news is what a good editor chooses to print then there is nothing wrong with full ads on fron page. It is high time newspapers were subjected to the principles of demand and supply. If the audience demands reports and the editor supplies ads, newspaper pays for its choice of ads over news.

But ads, whether on the front page or back page or centre page, have had hard influence on newspapers. And newspapers will continue to dance to tunes of the corporate world.

Front page ads are yes,

Front page ads are yes, certainly very distasteful but the fact remains that we are living and competing in a world where revenue matters like never before. So even so-called serious and ethical papers are pushed to use the front page to generate revenue. Perhaps a change in revenue model might be a good idea. But yes, front page ads can be done away with but for that we need an alternative idea and space! Padma Priya Reporter Hyderabad, India

I look foward to reading the

I look foward to reading the news and not looking at the advert on page one however adverts add colour to the page and are good for business so I don't mind them too match but the should not be prominient on the page and should be below the paper's fold. Diana Phiri Journalist

Considering the financial

Considering the financial constraints on media outlets today, lets face the reality that we cannot work without the advertiser's top dollar. Less money means less coverage. Front page advertisers should be placed at the bottom of the page - limited to just one or two (at max) advertisers on the page. We cannot ignore the business aspect of news.

Tthose who find front page

Tthose who find front page advertising to be objectionable are guilty of elitism. Newspapers are in the information business. Information is in the form of pictures, stories, headlines and advertising. Advertising, ladies and gentlemen, is information. So it is relevant to the reader and therefore worthy of being put on the front page when the advertiser pays a premium rate for the premium position in the newspaper. That's what pays the salaries of the reporters, editors, photographers and designers. Robertsmellis

Ear pieces and strips are

Ear pieces and strips are structured to advertise on front page and at the same time not interfere with the newspaper's headlines. These, i find very okay and moreso adding value to the newspaper industry. Lest we forget that this is a business like any other and adverstisers bring in huge revenues.

I believe we can work together with advertisers to have a win win situation for both parties. The industry has been created such that we can co-exist and putting limitations may cause a downfall where we could both lose. Front page ads?yes, any day!.

I don't mind advertisements

I don't mind advertisements on the front page. But it has to be Below Fold. It is bread and butter of the newspaper management, the front page ad space bring huge revenue to the newspaper. In today's competitive world, if when newspaper subscription is going down one has to put advt on front page.

It is even worse in India we have a separate full front page advertisement and another page inside. And that too also from The Times of India, which is one of the biggest Media house in India plus the revenue is growing.

It’s not advisable to carry

It’s not advisable to carry too many advertisements on front page of any newspaper. Without sacrificing self respect newspapers can allocate some space on front page. It can be of the size 20/2 position on the bottom right end. Once in a while this can be quarter page. It’s ideal for media houses to encourage more ear panels on front page, local pages and last page. They charge more and increase revenue by charging extra for these special positions. There is no harm in selling space of two ear panels on both sides of the mast head and two beneath. In addition to this, in the bottom of page one, papers can run panel strips, Clients would be happy to pay extra charges for getting this space. More advertisements ensure survival of newspapers in the age of stiff competition by visual and web media C.O.T Azeez

It is unethical and

It is unethical and unprofessional. The practice is rapidly shifting the principles of journalism; submerging the profession into public relations. Frontline newspapers in Nigeria presently sell the first five pages to politicians and business shylocks for media hypes. Excuses bordering on poor revenue are lame. The practice is unprofessional and should be condemned worldwide. Pius Odiaka

I must admit that it's good

I must admit that it's good to see a full leading page of news, rather than the intrusion of ads, on the first page of any self-respecting newspaper. There's plenty of space from page 2 onwards for such (socially useful and financially attractive) material, in my opinion. That said, there's a huge incentive for even 'serious' papers to maximise revenue, in the light of general profit, the current economic hard times, and the ongoing debate about whether print will be superseded by online publications. As a reader, though, in hard copy or online, I want information and news, primarily. At least, give me the headlines of the day (and more) without distractions on p.1, please.
