Should journalists add music to videos and slideshows?

More and more, journalists are adding music to news stories on the Web. Photos, photo slideshows and video often feature prerecorded music between or over narration.

"Music has power, and within a multimedia story, it has the power to hide a lot of flaws: to make a story move faster [and] to set an emotional tone for a piece," Regina McCombs, faculty at Poynter Institue, wrote recently in "Music in Multimedia: Add Sparingly, Not as a Crutch." (For an example of how music changes the tone of a story, click here.)

The BBC, for one, has decided against using music in news stories. "You are changing what you're representing, and if you're changing it, it shouldn't be there," according to Fiona Anderson, assistant editor of training and development at BBC Newsgathering.

What do you think? Should journalists ever add music to stories, and if so, when?

Although i couldnt test-run the example given, may be due to the state of my laptop, but i go with the BBC comment. What, for instance would determine choice of music, i personally think, it would remove the seriousness of the news message. Williams Ekanem Nigerian Journalist

Hi Pere, I am mainly thinking

Hi Pere,

I am mainly thinking of a quiet, unobtrusive layer of music that flows “underneath” a feature story. It seems to me that these kind of layers provide continuity without adding anything artificial.

If I was going to make a newsroom standard, it would be something like “Don’t use music that either detract from the story or adds something that isn't there.” Such a loosely worded guideline would allow creativity. After all, video on the web is still developing stylistically.

After a quick search, here are a few examples where video is used but does not, IMHO, detract from the story:

Al Jazeera (music starts at 1:20 or so)

Spokesman-Review (to be fair, here the music seems to be original, shot on site. But it’s often playing when we’re seeing something other than people singing)

ESPN

Las Vegas Sun

Use of music is not good for

Use of music is not good for objective reporting; for that matter i think BBC is right in stopping its use in their news. I think we need to ask ourselves what criteria we use in choosing the music to go with the news; the process of choosing must be very subjective i think. I think the music also may give connotations and different interpretation of the message. Different types of music may connote irony, judgement, condemnation, praise, etc, to different people hence the lose of objectivity of the news. Yes, we should be careful with music on the news.

i dont quiet agree with the

i dont quiet agree with the idea. adding music to news stories would distrot the story eg if beyonce's all the single ladies is mixed with a story on Iran election, you know,a god number would go for the song and pay less attention to issues in the story especially where proximity factor should play a critical role to a news story such as iran which is a global concern. in my country, atleast they would go for da song. besides iran is far from most minds and hey, boynce rocks in Zambia! And people will take the story as an entertainment one even when it should raise serious concrens and debate on an issue. how are we gonna sustain playing the informative role if the publics have this perception...

Steve Sweitzer has it right.

Steve Sweitzer has it right. I was one of many instrumental in writing the CBS News Standards. Kathlyn Clore makes an exception for "feature stories". I disagree. Feature stories are news and need to live by the same standard: No music unless it is an inherent part of the story. (I smile when I think of the number of producers - me included - who used the artifice of including video of a radio in a story that became the "excuse" for a short music section. I did it but I don't condone it.) And that is the problem with Ms Clore's exception. A standard needs to be absolute, not given exceptions. I also suggest that the anonymous comment that journalism is mean to "report facts and not emotions" is also not true. Facts alone cannot tell a story. As reporters we need to convey the emotion where it is germaine to the story. That's what great writing is all about, and great camera work and editing. The challenge I often give young reporters is: "Don;t write that something is "beautiful", make me see the beauty. By he same token do not use music as an emotional crutch. pere herford

I think music is fine for

I think music is fine for feature stories as long as the distributor has the right to use it. Which is to say, it is important to use rights-free music. This music might include classical music or music produced by a band that authorizes its use under, say, a Creative Commons license scheme.

Music does not seem right for hard news stories. I don't think, for example, dramatic music playing behind photos of debris from a plane crash, seems appropriate.

Kathlyn Clore, www.ejc.net

Music creates different

Music creates different emotional responses in different people - that's why you can hate a song that's a chart topper. It follows that adding music to images will elicit unpredictable emotional responses in the viewing audience.
I like the old CBS policy against using ANY music with a story unless it's part of the story - like a marching band playing as the parade passes by.

Steve Sweitzer

"Music has power ... to set

"Music has power ... to set an emotional tone..." That's exactly what we have avoid. Our job as journalist is to tell the facts, not relay emotions.
