Should journalists help investigate crimes?

A German news station is under fire for launching its own spin on the American show "To Catch a Predator." Both programs use Internet chats to lure potential pedophiles to a hidden news camera and then conduct an in-person sting. The surprise arrests are broadcast on television.

Some have criticized these shows for creating news instead of reporting it, and potentially deceiving sources through "gotcha journalism." Others say the stations are taking advantage of their unique position to both report crimes and help stop them.

In your country, do journalists help investigate crimes? Do you think journalists should strictly report news -- or can they create it, too?

JOURNALIST SHOULD HELP TO UNRAVEL CRIME

I think journalists are better investigators and should be allowed to investigate crimes...Journalists will dig deeper than other officials, which will result in them uncovering more..I have a British journalist friend who was investigating a murder and she came up with more information that what the police had on their files and what was before the court...I also believe that if journalists were given the opportunity to investigate crime independently, there would be less unsolved murders and other crimes as people are more open with journalists than police officers..

JOURNALISTS MUST HELP TO INVESTIGATE CRIMES

IN MY COUNTRY NIGERIA I THINK JOURNALIST SHOULD HELP INVESTIGATE CRIME.

Journalists much better investigators than other officials

Jahangir khan here, I am a working Crime Reporter in Pakistani News Channel since last 2 years, I observed that Journalists can investigate any kind of incident or story better as compare to other officials. Pakistan is in war condition and routine news stories often crime stories. In my little experience I have learned that major crime stories can investigate due to present condition and circumstances of Pakistan. Crimme rate increasing day by day in Pakistan and Police is going to introduce computerised information sysytem for crime record keeping but many incidents could not reach at their final stage due to Policing system in Pakistan. A fair Journlist can find out the hidden truth but its depend on the organization policy to high light it or not. But Journlaist have the complete information about the story, people hasitate to tell about the incident or related information to investigator or police because of secracy but a journalist have skills to get information….

Pakistani journalists are good in crime investigate

In my country Pakistan , journalist are good in crime reporting and they investigate the whole story before publish from state department or government press release .no doubt our Intelligence agency is good in all field .the reporter from GEO TV and some other are good in crime investigate .our well known Urdu newspaper DAILY JANG many journalistic publish a hidden side of the story by their sources and their own mind analysis about any case. suggestion : at the end its totally police work so my country police must be up tp-date with the new techniques of investigation .

Journalists are even better than most investigative officers

In many cases pictures are taken scientific reports and hypothesis are made but cases are almost never solved especially in African countries where governments make very little provision for investigative facilities however journalists have the power to control, anchor and even direct they way in which evidence leads to the criminals. Often what journalists write keep the criminals and their accomplices on their toes until a case is resolved so yes absolutely journalists should get involved in investigation

being a journalist my inner

being a journalist my inner confidence always encourage me to reveal criminal faces of our society. in my country Pakistan it has been worse experience for those journalist who are making their stories specially focus on corruption, terrorist & criminal activities, as many journalist are killed during performed their holly duties.may Pakistani people believes journalists are faithful than police or other investigate agencies that's why they always preferred & trust on the reports which submitted by journalist. despite fear the Pakistani journalist are doing tremendous job to fight against crimes & terrorism activities .. thanks

In my country, Colombia,

In my country, Colombia, journalists don't help to do crime investigation I think people think that's police work. However it might also be part of investigative journalism which it's about of making public what is illegal and hidden. If you decide to go after crime investigation you do it under your own risk and motivated for a big passion in what you are doing, is part of having some kind of sixth sense. I love investigative journalism, though so far I'm just a student but I love seeking for my sources and information, I'll go to the end of the World for an investigation because when you are doing it and you start to feel that the pieces match you get some kind of excitement that fills you of adrenaline and... I don't know, I've never really felt it but I like it when I imagine it.

Now, going back to crime, it has different kinds such as murdering, (which is the worst) and other illegal actions like robbing, drug trafficking, etc. The worst is the crime, the higher risk is your life.

However, there are two TV programs, of different channels that do investigations on their own (their not related to the news) which takes them several months, includes info provided by protected sources who don't reveal their identity and then present the story to people. Sometimes what they reveal becomes news and I think this is good because help citizens to have a wider insight of their country or city and to know realities they didn't know.

JOURNALISTS ARE MOST TRUSTED

Being viewed as the societies watchdogs journalist should help to investigate and burst crimes. In my country (Kenya) Media is one of the most trusted and held in high esteem among the citizens. Its the institution citizens depend to get a lot of information. For some reasons Governments investigates certain information and don't make it public to their citizens. Therefore citizens are left with the option to rely on journalists since whatever they get-in which they believe in, share with them.

Journalists are most trusted and anybody would be ready to share or disclose any secret close to her or his heart may they be civil servants, police officers, ordinary citizens, corporate bosses, health officers and many others. They stand better chance of unraveling mysteries than when investigations institution or police. NANJINIA WAMUSWA NAIROBI, KENYA

Jounalists and investigation

I actually think that journalists can do better work than cops in some instances. Journalists can build better information-gathering networks and can reveal crimes which govts would want to keep under wraps.

JOURNALISTS CAN AT TIMES UNRAVEL WHAT THE POLICE CAN'T

It sounds quite absurd to task journalists with investigative role but the truth of the matter is that its very important . In cases where the public has lost faith in the investigative arm of the police, ,journalists who will always be the peoples watchdog have the opportunity to unearth the iniquities in the society . Infact in Kenya where i come from, investigative journalists have been at times lucky to get information that the police have failed to access before . They have also had the chance to show the public the ineffectiveness of their forces in curbing crime by at times dramatizing a crime to see if the police can be of help . Its quite an interesting field and should be much encouraged .WARIAHE Nairobi-Kenya

Journalists Helping to Unravel Crimes?

The idea sounds great but it is a question of "different strokes for different people."In my own part of the world, the law eforcement agents are often part of the crime syndicate.A policeman under investigation admitted that no crime is committed without the knowlege of the law enforcement agents. For a journalist to have a breakthrough in unravelling a crime he must be mindful of who he speaks with or he may be walking into a deadend or becoming a victim of a systemic failure where crime and corruption is glorified and honesty and uprightness is derided. It is hoped that with the recent signing of the Freedom of Information Bill by members of the National Assembly Nigerian journalists can join their other colleagues as agents of change and whistle blowers.

I believe Journalism should do more Investigative report

While I believe in the ethics of Investigation, there is a great potential for journalist to involve in investigation.

Meaning, looking at the journalism point of view, alot of times Investigative department for that matter can hide thier findings from the public in the name of confidentiality. However, where is the 'right to know' stands in the light of the public interest.

There are avenues which I as a journalist believed that we can use to put out our information to the public as far as investigation is concern.

JOURNALISTS MUST HELP TO INVESTIGATE CRIMES

I experienced to investigate young girls who viced as prostitute at Kampong Air in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It was very weird when I did it. However, instead of investigating the senario. My cash were stolen from my wallet. It was the work of the young girls who prostituted themselves as well hypnotism to steal cash. I shall further tell you my stories again if I have my times to fully write reports of the crimes committed by young girls in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
