Should journalists help law enforcement catch criminals?
The U.S. television network, NBC, airs a program aimed at identifying and detaining child sex abusers. On 'To Catch a Predator,' decoys log into chatrooms and identify themselves as minors, while NBC cameras are sent to catch the offender. Recently, Iranian TV partnered with police to apply similar techniques to identify drivers who abuse females on the street.
While some argue such programs expose guilty predators, others raise alarm that journalists become an arm of law enforcement when they host and become part of such programming.
What do you think? Should journalists take part in these programs or should they adhere to professional codes of conduct and avoid participation in any law enforcement activities?

I believe the job of a journalist is to reflect [mirror] the happenings in the society including the activities of the so called law enforcement officers. ideally the law enforcement agents are suppose to keep the law but often time they break it with impunity. I believe journalism is a special calling, it does not take side, it deals with any issues pictorially and without sentiment. For example I did a story recently on men who have sex men [it is no go area in Nigeria but people do it] it was like are you one of them? my response was that I do not have to be one of them to write on it as Journalism. I am alos concern about the safety of Journalists when criminals now perceive us as enemies. we could be their target. Let the law enforcement make use of information in the media like any other person in the society please. Godwin Odemijie Radio Nigeria. Abuja.
Because one of
Because one of the cardinal responsibilities of a journalist is to expose the ills of society, it therefore behooves the world community of journalists to join the campaign of assisting law enforcement in cathcing and exposing criminals that are making our world inhabitable. The media as 'watchdogs" of society should not only bark at wrongdoers, but must also bite when necessary. I urge the media world-wide to join law enforcement personnel in putting to an end criminal activities.
i belive any go
i belive any good country to have the media as one of its strong arms. though it is not the case with many countries. a journalist feeding the police with correct information, helps the country to have a very high level of security, thus the area of investigative journalism. this is to say, they work hand in hand for the security and rights of the people. i see no harm in such a harmony. Brothers and Sisters who have opted to carry out thier duty in this domains should not be move, it is a very bold and good step. any one who is against it, knows why.
Although that s
Although that sounds controversial, I support the media partnering with law enforcement agencies in combating crime. Well, the media has always positioned itself as a pursuer of justice, human rights etc. So I see no reason with calling the bluff of those who do not mean it. But then it is important that the media is not involved in witch hunting innocent people or maliciously pursuing suspects; i.e. for the wrong reasons.
Sin we,journali
Sin we,journalists are not Sherlock Holme, we have not to try to deviate juridicial desicions. But we have to trace the news about crimes or unfair government or corruption by government there would be explored the infairs. We have to be sided with public.
I am UNDP Malaw
I am UNDP Malawi's Communications Officer but I am making this contribution in my personal capacity and as a journalist with nine years of practice.
There is no better fulfillment of the 'Watch Dog' role of journalism than this. There has been instances in Malawi when the press has unearthed worst practices by sectors of society, especially those in positions of power, and nothing has been done by the 'long arm of the law.' This is not only frustrating to the journalist and society as a whole but it erodes the power of journalism as a profession of checks and balances.
It is for this reason that I support the journalism of correction and anything that can be done to bring evil perpetrators to book. If the world is relieved of one child abuser, one corrupt official, one dictatorial government through the work of journalism, should we be looking at how how that has been achieved or how better the world is today because of it?

I strongly beli
I strongly believe that we as journalists/reporters should continue in playing our role as reporters - reporting news/events/happenings as they unfold. If by cahnce a crime is connected to what we report, then the law-enforcement officers can take it from where our story ends. Journalists are not experts on crime. If we are to, or must must help law enforcement officers catch criminals, then our duties will have to be redefined and perhaps reinforced with some lessons in criminal law. Leslie from Liberia.
It has come to
It has come to the attention of this writer's that a nation used cash to lure the journalists to write bad of other nation in the political era which sounds very bad. This writer's hopes that worldwide journalists try not to accept anything either cash or whatever items. We do our works but we don't take materials or cash from the politicians to damage the reputations of the worlwide journalism. If a journalist starts to accept, we are just a useless people who are scared of poverty and starvation. We are Journalists. We should not be used by the government or government officers or government agencies or any nations to use the journalists as a scape goats to make the politicians popular and showing them what they did were true and the journalists are wrong. So, don't let us be used as a spy or whatever means. Please surf the www.royalsulu.com for the journalists personal information. Thank you for you attention.
