U.S. media project in Iraq: A boon for democracy, or unnecessary propaganda?

On October 3rd, the U.S.-based Washington Post newspaper reported that the U.S. Defense Department "will pay private U.S. contractors in Iraq up to $300 million over the next three years to produce news stories, entertainment programs and public service advertisements for the Iraqi media in an effort to 'engage and inspire' the local population to support U.S. objectives and the Iraqi government.”

In the article, the Post reported that the initiative comes as a reaction against the propaganda played by terrorist groups like Osama Bin Laden’s Al-Qeda, “whose media operations include sophisticated Web sites and professionally produced videos and audios featuring Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants.”

What do you think about the U.S.-led initiative? Will it deter the Iraqi media from becoming more independent? Or might it result in increased Iraqi support for the fight against terrorism? If you believe the latter, is such propaganda really so bad?

Quote my words "Politicians terrorisms (Government Terrorism) create Private Sector Terrorism, which are equally results". So, let people cook whatever cuisines in their cooking pots or in the pantry where you don't attempt to mingle people domestic affairs. However, we can involve by not showing us that we are hero or heroine. We have our weapons to help a life or lives but not to use our weapons to kill a life. Look! every where the world is not in a peace atmosphere. I hope the first black president of America which will win next year will not applied his bullism culture towards other weakest people or nation. What we suffer today are because of poor world quality leaders who being controlled by their lusts only. Don't label anyone are terrrorists. Who are the terrorists. The terrorists are lusts that is found in ourselves. Don't blame the religion of Islam, clerics but blame the world leaders who never used their coconut shells to apply their thinking wisely for the sake of the poorest and weakest people. Can we see with our bare eyes today. The world being destroyed by the Politicians who have the knowledge but not the stupid people who don't have the knowledge. So, who started the war?. The stupid people or the knowledgeable people. Think tank on this. I hope that Obama wins next election [This is my prediction for Obama - the black man]. Quote my words on the 19th October 2008. I hope he wins this election in the United States of America where his policies will mind own your business. But, he will only cares of the United States domestic affairs and development of economy for the people and welfare of the people in the United States of America. I hope my messages don't offend anybody. These words are just my own personal views.

I'd still like to hear more, on the surface this sounds pretty bogus but "produce" could mean a lot of things. I know that PSYOPS over there does a lot with the local populous in terms of enabling since they aren't experienced in dissemination. The Post article is dead on with stating that the insurgent groups are growing higher tech with their propaganda, the last clip featuring Osama was littered with computer animation and graphics, so why shouldn't the other side have an edge up?
