Journalists in the United States who report on minority communities can participate in this online course on covering markets and consumer finance.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will offer two online courses in English and Spanish focused on covering markets, including how to plan for retirement, understanding your 401k, stocks and bonds, mutual funds and private and public companies.

The online courses will take place from October 22 through December 16.

Selected participants will be asked to present a project proposal that they will develop through the length of the course. A project mentoring period to help participants finalize their projects will take place from December 17, 2012 until January 25, 2013.

The English course will be led by Chris Roush, who teaches business and economics reporting at the University of North Carolina and has written six books, including two about business journalism. Roush has also previously served as an online course trainer for ICFJ's programs.

Three participants who participate in the courses will receive a McGraw-Hill Markets Reporting Award and cash prizes of US$2,000, US$1,000 and US$500.

The deadline for registration is October 17.
