George C. McNutt
NorCal BMA will launch the McNutt Fund Scholarship Program at an October 29 event that marks the chapter’s 75th anniversary. The scholarship honors the first president of the chapter, George C. McNutt, and his wife, Claire. The pair met on the job for LeTourneau and later opened their own industrial advertising agency in Oakland.
George McNutt became the first president of the NorCal chapter in 1947. The organization still was known as the National Industrial Advertisers Association, writes Gina Milani, NorCal PR director. Milani is working with longtime BMA members and Clint Kramer, a BMA SoCal member who is McNutt’s grandnephew, to put together his biography.
The career marketer championed education. McNutt introduced post-war seminars that supported Bay-area marketers as their focus shifted from government to civilian and B2B clients, Milani writes.
McNutt helped build the BMA network. He contributed marketing columns and worked with area universities to develop a curriculum for the field. He also wrote the best seller Business/Industrial Marketing and Communications. His work yielded high honors. In 1988 he earned the G.D. Crain, Jr., lifetime achievement award.
His legacy includes a $5,000 endowment to seed a scholarship fund managed by the NorCal chapter. Undergraduate marketing students at UC-Berkeley, Notre Dame de Manur University and San Jose State University are eligible.
In its first year, the fund will award two $500 scholarships. The chapter will be raising money to expand the initiative, says Josef Chervenka, VP-finance for the NorCal chapter.
It contributes to a BMA mission to support marketers in every phase of their careers.
“We can reach students in college, nurture them though our Young Professional program and then provide value throughout their careers,” Chervenka said.
