Brazil’s Rede Globo releases interactive portal on Amazon deforestation

Date: 9/19/08

Journalists who cover themes related to Amazon deforestation can now consult a portal created by Rede Globo, Brazil’s largest broadcast organization.

The portal’s main idea is to give voice to those who want to monitor and protest the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. The reports will be used in news stories, investigated and presented to Brazilian authorities so that strong actions can be taken, according to Rede Globo.

A video shows how the forest is monitored. The surveillance is done through an interactive map, updated in real time via satellite to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE, in Portuguese).
