Civic engagement competition open to journalists [US]

Date: 2/10/11

Journalists or media organizations based in the US that have encouraged or enhanced civic engagement can enter a competition.

The Manship Prize, sponsored by the Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communication, recognizes reporting that has used innovative media to advance the capacity of citizens to better respond to challenges in the public arena.

The award, inaugurated in 1998, was created to recognize exemplary use of media technology in the service of public affairs. The work can be local, regional, national or global.

Nominations (and self-nominations) may be for journalists, documentary makers, authors, bloggers, website-content providers and academics. Previous winners include Bill Adair, editor of PolitiFact, and The Times-Picayune and WWL-TV for coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

The winner receives US$1,000 and an expenses-paid trip to an awards ceremony at Louisiana State University.
