African journalists and their counterparts around the world who work for Commonwealth newspapers that are members of the Commonwealth Press Union (CPU) may be eligible to apply for several fellowships.

Twelve Commonwealth editors or senior journalists will be selected for the Harry Brittain Fellowship. During May and June 1999, the fellows will spend six weeks in the United Kingdom learning how British news media function and examining their political, economic and social infrastructures. This fellowship also incorporates the Lady Brittain Fellowship, to be awarded to a female editor or senior journalist from a developing country, and the Rolls-Royce Fellowship, which will be awarded to an editor or senior journalist from a developing country.

The Gordon Fisher Fellowship allows one Commonwealth journalist to spend an academic year at Toronto University, from October 1999 to September 2000. The fellowship honors the memory of the former president and chief executive officer of Southam Inc., and is funded through a grant from the Alva Foundation, established by the Fisher family.

The CPU Fellowship in International Journalism allows a young Commonwealth journalist to complete a master's degree at City University in London during the academic year October 1999 to September 2000. The program was created through the support of News International PLC and the London Goodenough Trust for Overseas Graduates.

Each year the CPU is asked to nominate a candidate for the Commonwealth Foundation Fellowship. The Fellow will spend two weeks in England and two weeks in another Commonwealth country during April 1999.
