Competition for journalism on biomedical research seeks entries [US]

U.S. journalists covering the humane use of animals in biomedical research can enter a competition.

The Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards, sponsored by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, honor professional journalists whose reporting has enhanced public understanding of how the humane and responsible use of animal models leads to medical and scientific discoveries. Five awards will be presented for outstanding investigative reporting published, broadcast or posted online.

Previous winners include Lorna Benson of Minnesota Public Radio for her article, “Hope for Brain Cancer Treatment After Canine Success” and Emily Singer of Technology Review for “How Injured Racehorses Might Save Your Knees.”

Articles must have been published between April 1, 2010 and Mach 31, 2011. Award winners will receive US$1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the awards ceremony.
