Ethiopian Media Fellowship candidates sought
The DeWitt Wallace Center for Communications and Journalism at Duke University will award fellowships to three Ethiopian journalists to study at Duke University in the United States for four weeks from March 21 to April 16, 1999.
The competition for the Ethiopian Media Fellowship is open to all public- or private-sector Ethiopian journalists living and working in Ethiopia. The program includes seminars with other journalists to discuss topical issues, and trips to major U.S. media companies. The program covers round-trip coach airfare from Ethiopia, domestic transportation, lodging, program tuition, per diem expenses up to $35 per day, and health insurance.
Applicants must be professional journalists (print or broadcast) or media policy makers in Ethiopia who have recognized leadership abilities. Good English-language skills are required; finalists will be interviewed by telephone before selection.
Applications must include a statement of the applicantнs view of the role of the news media in society; a curriculum vitae, including date and place of birth, education and complete employment history, mailing address, telephone, fax number and, when possible, e-mail address; three examples of the applicantнs best work (for print journalists, a copy of the applicantнs newspaper and three published articles; or for television or radio journalists, a video or audio tape with three stories, an English summary); a letter from the applicant describing the applicant's professional responsibilities and how the fellowship would be used to further the practice of journalism at home; two letters of professional recommendation, including one from the applicant's employer. Applications will not be returned.
