Fellowships to introduce science communicators to oceanography

Deadline:

5/15/09

An Ocean Science Journalism Fellowship program (OSJ), to take place September 13 to 19, is accepting applications from science communicators interested in learning more about the interdisciplinary and wide-ranging fields of oceanography and ocean engineering. Deadline: May 15.

The one-week intensive program, being held by the Massachusetts, U.S.-based nonprofit Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, is accepting applications from professional writers, producers, and editors working for print, broadcast, radio, and Internet media. All fellows receive a travel allowance, as well as room and board for one week.

Through seminars, lab visits, and field expeditions, OSJ Fellows gain access to new research findings and to fundamental background information in engineering, marine biology, engineering, geology and geophysics, marine chemistry and geochemistry, and physical oceanography.

Topics include: harmful algal blooms; deep-sea hydrothermal vents; seafloor earthquakes; ice-sheet dynamics; the ocean's role in climate change; the human impact on fisheries and coastline change; ocean instruments; observatories; and underwater robots.
