US journalists passionate about health news can apply for a fellowship.

The National Health Journalism Fellowship, sponsored by a health endowment offered by the University of Southern California, encourages journalists and their newsrooms to report on health in a time of declining resources.

The program is open to professional journalists from print, broadcast, and online media around the country, including freelancers. Applicants do not have to be health journalists, but have a demonstrated interest in health as a topic.

Ethnic media journalists are particularly encouraged to apply, as are applications proposing collaborative projects with ethnic news outlets. Fellows will receive US$2,000 upon completion of their projects.

In addition to proposing and completing a reporting project, participants are required to attend a six-day program. Fellows will be expected to attend the entire session.

The program for 2011 has not yet been finalized, but last year’s speakers included John A. Rich, author of “Wrong Place, Wrong Time: Trauma and Violence in the Lives of Young Black Men”” and former fellows, Suzanne Bohan and Sandy Kleffman.
