Interactive maps course open to journalists

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will be offering a four-week online course titled “The Production of Interactive Maps," an introductory training session for journalists on digital tools for data analysis and visualization.
Journalists worldwide can apply to this workshop, but priority will be given to applicants who are from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The course focuses on basic skills needed to build interactive maps, how to critically analyze maps used in journalism and how to develop a geospatial data journalism project.
The instructor is Carlos Martínez de la Serna, a former editor for El Mundo in Madrid. The workshop will be taught in Spanish from August 27 through September 23.
The journalists accepted into the online course will pay a US$60 administrative fee. A certificate of participation will be issued to those who comply with the course’s requirements.
For this course, knowledge of online tools and applications like Google Docs is required. Knowledge of spreadsheet programs like Excel or Numbers is also beneficial.
The deadline to register is August 16.
