International conference on terrorism and media to be held in Vienna

Deadline:

10/5/09

A two-day conference on terrorism, media and the law will be held in Vienna, Austria, on October 5 and 6, and will gather prominent figures to discuss the impact of the fight against terrorism on press freedom, freedom of expression and civil liberties.

The event, titled “The War on Words; Terrorism, Media and the Law,” will feature panel sessions focusing on the watchdog role of the media, the relationship between freedom of expression and religious tolerance, and government efforts to broaden law enforcement powers and restrict access to information in the name of security.

Participants will also set guiding principles for a “Vienna Declaration on Terrorism, Media and the Law” that can be used around the world to rally support for freedom of expression and of the press.

The event is being organized by the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Salzburg-based Center for International Legal Studies.
