Journalists' rights group launched in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwean journalists recently launched the group the Zimbabwe Journalists for Human Rights (ZJHR), which will aim to facilitate efforts to curb violations of media freedom and the abuse of journalists' professional rights with impunity.
According to ZJHR spokesperson Dumisani Muleya, also an assistant editor with the privately owned Zimbabwe Independent, the organiation was molded along the lines of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Muleya said ZJHR would lobby the government to create an enabling environment for the free practice of journalism. Legal assistance would also be offered to journalists in need.
