Nominations open for 1999 Louis M. Lyons Award for journalists

Nominations are open for the 1999 Louis M. Lyons Award for conscience and integrity in journalism, offered by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, reports IFEX Clearing House. Every year, the class of Nieman Fellows honors a journalist, or a group of journalists, with the Lyons Award. The award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium, is named after the late curator of the Nieman Foundation.

All full-time print and broadcast journalists worldwide are eligible. Nominations must be made by a third party, either an individual or an organization, and news organizations may nominate their own employees.

Previous winners include Olatunji Dare of the мGuardianо newspaper in Nigeria мfor resistance to the military government;о Goenawan Mohamad, founder and editor of мTempoо newsmagazine in Indonesia, мfor courage in making information in spite of government repression;о and the staff of мOslobodjenjeо in the former Yugoslavia мfor commitment to the people of Sarajevo.о

Applications must contain an official letter of nomination, a one-page biography of the nominee, two letters of recommendation and three samples of the nomineeнs work. The deadline is February 1.
