Report on Kenya’s media coverage of political crisis released

Date: 3/5/08

The three organizations Reporters Without Borders, International Media Support, and Article 19 have released a joint report on Kenya’s media coverage in the violent aftermath of the nation’s highly disputed December 27, 2007, elections.

Although “preaching is not a journalist’s main job,” instead of reporting on the crisis and the violence following the elections, Kenya’s media has attempted to serve as “peacemakers,” the report says. Meanwhile, “thousands of Kenyans pour into the streets in search of ‘truth’ and ‘justice’.”

The report concludes with a set of recommendations from the three organizations.
