European journalists interested in pursuing an in-depth research project can apply for a fellowship.

The Milena Jesenská Fellowship, sponsored by the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) enables journalists who write about culture to take time out of the newsroom for research projects.

Winners from last year include Zsuzsa Balazs, a journalist from Hungary who researched public places in European cities and Yulia Arskaya, a Russian assistant professor who researched totalitarianism in Russian and German literature. This year, proposals that focus on human rights are strongly encouraged.

Fellows receive a stipend of EUR€7,630 (about US$10,335) and spend three months at IWM in Vienna. Project proposals must be in English.

European journalists from both in and outside the EU 27 can apply. This year, applications are accepted from journalists in Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
