Study considers media role in conflict resolution
The European Institute for the Media (EIM) is continuing research on Media and Intra-state Conflict in Macedonia by Risto Lazarov, the general manager of Telma TV, a private television station in the Macedonian capital, Skopje. Media and Intra-state Conflict is an international research project carried on at the Institute with the support of the European Cultural Foundation in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The study examines the media's role in the structure of intra-state conflict, and it aims to suggest ways the media can contribute to conflict resolution.
Dusan Reljic, project director of EIM's East-West Cooperation Programme, describes in the study's preface how ethnic Albanians and Macedonian police clashed in the town of Gostivar in July 1997. Two Albanians were killed and more than 50 wounded. It was a single incident in a series of clashes -- often violent -- that occurred between the Albanian minority and authorities in Macedonia. In light of the conflict, officials at EIM decided to include the Macedonian media in the study of media performance in situations of tension and conflict.
