Journalists interested in improving business reporting skills can apply to attend a course in Dakar, Senegal.

Organized by Thomson Reuters and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), it will be held from August 27-31, 2012.

Learning by doing is a key element of the program, including in particular exercises and reports in live conditions. The course places great importance on improving financial coverage nationally and internationally through detailed briefings, conferences, and, where appropriate, a reporting trip to a financial institution.

Detailed discussions will enable journalists to deepen various topics, including the exploitation of natural resources, economic governance, taxation and capital flight from developing countries.

For this Thomson Reuters Foundation course, applicants must be journalists in Francophone Africa currently working as journalists or regular contributors to print media, radio, television or electronic media.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in their country, and possess a good level of written and spoken French.

The Foundation offers scholarships for journalists from developing world/countries in political transition working for organizations with no resources for training. Scholarships include economy class travel expenses, transfers and accommodation.

The deadline for applications is July 22.
