UNESCO releases guide for community radio in India

Date: 1/9/08

Two years ago, India’s government announced a new community radio policy allowing NGOs to own and operate community radio stations. The legislation seeks to foster more interaction between nonprofits and the people they hope to reach. The large number of NGOs submitting applications to start radio stations has motivated UNESCO to release a user’s guide to community radio.

“Community Radio: A user’s guide to the technology” lays out the technical parameters for community radio operators in India. The guide provides instructions for using the equipment found in community stations. It also provides guidelines and solutions for budgeting, management and maintenance.

The UNESCO guide comes at a good time, since India’s government has made it its goal to create 4,000 community radio stations by 2008. To read the guide, visit http://snipurl.com/1wzk6.
