The UNESCO/Cano Press Freedom Prize
UNESCO is seeking nominations for its annual press freedom prize in honor of Guillermo Cano, the Colombian journalist who was slain 10 years ago in front of his newspaper's offices.
The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize is awarded to recognize a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world.
U.N. member states and international and regional professional and non-governmental organizations working in journalism and freedom of expression may nominate candidates for the 1999 prize. No member state or organization may submit more than three candidates in one year.
The prize, to be presented May 3, 1999, World Press Freedom Day, consists of U.S. $25,000 and a sculpture by Edgar Negret. Nominations should be sent by e-mail in French or English with the nomination form by October 31, 1998, to s.coudray@unesco.org
