Aspiring young film critics from the U.K. can enter a writing competition.

The Ken Loach Essay Contest, sponsored by the British Film Institute and Sight & Sound, invites writers between 15 and 25 years old to submit an essay on the future direction of British filmmaking. The U.K. government has recently announced a review of film policy and writers are encouraged to comment on this new development.

The essay should be under 1,500 words, demonstrate knowledge of British film history and present a coherent and persuasive argument.

The winner will win up to one year’s mentoring with a Sight & Sound journalist, as well as a pair of tickets to a London Film Festival gala screening in September. Prizes will also be awarded to two runners up.
