  • Journalism students to have international conference in Riga

    European journalism and communication students have until March 10 to apply for participation in an international journalism conference in Riga, Latvia.

    The conference is scheduled for May 3 to 7, 2006, organized by students at the University of Latvia and the European Forum of Journalism Students. The Dutch Embassy is supporting the event.

  • Ethics seminar in Washington to offer scholarships

    Latin American journalists have until April 26 to apply for a chance to spend a week in Washington, D.C., where they will explore and debate the ethics of their craft.

    The next round of the Scripps Howard Latin American Media Ethics Seminar is scheduled for July 23 to August 3 and will include panel discussions, case study analyses, and media visits. Event organizers will cover the cost of airfare, meals, lodging, transportation and health insurance during the program.

  • Forum discusses pressing issues for Arab, international media

    The Al-Jazeera satellite TV network has organized a regional forum to discuss a variety of issues, including how to define journalism and ethics in different surroundings. The three-day event began January 31 at the network’s headquarters in Doha, Qatar.

  • Training in Gabarone aims to increase understanding of ethics

    Senior print and broadcast journalists in Botswana can participate in a workshop that would prepare them to teach ethics back in their own newsrooms. The event is scheduled for January 31 to February 3, at the President Hotel in Gabarone.

    The Press Council of Botswana is organizing the workshop to foster better understanding of its code of ethics. The editors and media managers who participate will be able to train their colleagues at their various organizations.

  • Journalists to gather for summit in Dominican Republic

    Journalists, editors, professors and professionals will gather in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for an international meeting scheduled for April 6 to 8. The fifth Iberian-American Summit of Communicators will include meetings and roundtables on journalism and communication themes.

  • Swedish group offers seminar on journalism and democracy

    Journalists from Africa, Asia and Latin America are eligible for a training program on journalism and democracy, scheduled for June 5 to 23 in Sweden. Application deadline: February 15.

    The seminar, which will take place in Kalmar and Stockholm, will focus on the opportunities and obstacles of independent journalism, ethics and newsroom organization, among other topics. The Sweden-based Institute for Further Education of Journalists (FOJO) is organizing the event.

  • Newsletter for rural journalists launches in Pakistan

    Sadiq News, a bulletin that covers freedom of expression issues for rural Pakistani journalists, has published and begun distributing its inaugural issue.

    The Rural Media Network of Pakistan is publishing the newsletter with technical assistance from UNESCO and the Nawa-i-Ahmedpur Sharqia newspaper. The Urdu-language newsletter includes information on press freedom violations, ethics, training, and other things of interest to rural journalists.
