  • Kenyan television training school becomes reality

    The Mohamed Amin Foundation for Television, Radio, Photo-Journalism & Multi-Media launched a television training school in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 1998.

    This school is a product of the work of Salim Amin, managing director of Camerapix Television and a director of Camerapix Publishers International; David Johnson and Christel de Wit, project coordinators and directors of the school; Pius and Mary Okelo of Makini Schools; and Lillian Beam, an educational consultant.

  • Workshops planned for Kenyan media correspondents

    The Media Development Association (MDA), of Nairobi, Kenya, provides training for Kenyan correspondents on the following topics: news writing, feature writing, investigative reporting, journalism ethics, photojournalism, development writing, environmental writing, sub-editing, court and legal reporting, human rights reporting.

    "Our activities are funded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany," said Robert Kihara, MDA's chairman.

  • Cyber-Times offers a forum to young writers worldwide

    Communications and journalism students aspiring to be published writers will be able to display their talents on the Cyber-Times when it is launched in July by the City University of Hong Kong.

    Students from around the world will soon be vying to have their stories published for a large and diverse international audience, according to an announcement from the School of Journalism at Carlton University, in Ottawa, Canada.

  • New book examines the world's mass media

    UNESCO is offering a new book, "World Communication Report," by Dr. Lofti Maherzi.

    The report is a "comprehensive account of the communication scene - media, technology and economic and development issues," says Federico Mayor, director-general of UNESCO, in the book's introduction.

    Among the subjects treated in the book is the role of the free flow of information in building democracy.

  • Nieman Foundation at Harvard offers opportunities for study

    The Nieman Foundation is the oldest mid-career fellowship program for journalists in the world. The program was inaugurated with the first class of Nieman Fellows in 1939. Fellowships are awarded to working journalists "of particular accomplishment and promise" for an academic year of study at Harvard University. Most classes at Harvard College and in the graduate schools are open to the fellows during their 10-month appointments. Fellows do not receive course credits or a degree during the year.

  • New award to honor best European interactive publishers

    Interactive Publishing, the annual summit of online publishers held in Zurich, with international publication Europemedia.com and Swiss publisher Ringier have established the IP Top award for European interactive publishing, the European Journalism Center (EJC) reports.

    An international jury will assess successful approaches, innovation, design, user-friendliness, content and interactivity.

  • Nominees sought for Hellman/Hammett grants

    Human Rights Watch (HRW) is calling for nominations for Hellman/Hammett grants, the annual program it administers to writers who have suffered political persecution and are in financial need.

    The grants are intended for recipients whose primary vocation is writing, HRW officials said, although the group also considers activists who write to advance human rights issues.

  • Albanian lawmakers adopt new electronic media law

    Albanian lawmakers passed a new electronic media law that is to take effect October 15, according to the Albanian Daily News.

    The draft was prepared by the parliament's media commission. Chairman Musa Ulqini said that in creating the law, the commission consulted European laws in cooperation with experts from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe.

  • Belgrade conference canceled; Yugoslav authorities warn journalists

    The conference "Broadcasting for a Democratic Europe" was canceled after Yugoslav authorities prevented a number of foreign participants from obtaining visas. The event, organized by the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), was to take place October 2 and 3 in Belgrade.

  • Warsaw Journalism Center to present seminar on economic reporting

    Journalists seeking to understand the intricacies of reporting on developments in Poland's market economy are invited to a seminar, "How to Uncover the Truth About the Economy," scheduled for November at the Warsaw Journalism Center's new offices in the city's Zoliborz district.

    Jan Bazyl Lipszyc, editor-in-chief of Businessman, and the magazine's deputy editor-in-chief, Zbigniew Gajewski, will lead the seminar in analysis of information on the economy and news media dealing with economic issues.
