  • Ethnic Albanian women practice journalism amid the harsh reality of Kosovo

    During a recent visit to the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in Washington, D.C., radio journalist Aferdita Kelmendi spoke of coping with the demands of her work in Kosovo. Serbianforces are engaged in quelling a separatist movement there, a struggle in which Serbs have driven out ethnic Albanian civilians--who constitute Kosovo's overwhelming majority--and havedestroyed their homes.

    "Maybe because of a longtime experience in journalism I have built in me some mechanisms," Kelmendi said.

  • Serbia's independent broadcasters-Reporting under fire

    Veran Matic, editor of Belgrade's Radio B92 and chair of ANEM, the Association of Independent Electronic Media in SR Yugoslavia, will be in New York, U.S.A., on September 12-16.

    The International League for Human Rights has arranged three public meetings for Matic with the support of the Open Society Institute.

    The Moscow Media and Policy Center has recently launched its own web site with the financial support of the British Know How Fund and technical assistance from Internews, Moscow. It is a server to those interested in the issues of mass media regulations and practices in Russia and in the Newly Independent States. The site is in Russian with English translation to follow soon.

  • EJTA's mid-career group to meet in September

    According to the 1998 newsletter of the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) the mid-career group will meet for its annual conference in Lucerne, Switzerland, on September 4-5. The conference will focus on how institutions for advanced training deal with online journalistic methods and models.

    EJTA's chief aim is to stimulate European cooperation in journalism education and mid-career training between non-profit training centers, and to develop a professional approach toward journalism training.

  • Demosthenes programs--Fall Schedule

    The media section of the Council of Europe has planned several media events in almost all former communist countries of Europe this fall. They will be carried out within the framework of the Demosthenes and Demosthenes-Bis programs, which are among the council's initiatives for countries undergoing the transition to democracy.

  • Journalists' group seeks solution to Balkan tension

    The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) plans a visit to Macedonia for its members, October 7-11. The trip is scheduled in advance of parliamentary elections October 18. The goal is to seek solutions to Balkan tensions.

    The schedule of events includes visits and interviews with Macedonian politicians and U.N. officials as well as a party rally. Journalists who are interested in economic matters may meet with heads of major companies, the Chamber of Commerce and the agency for privatization.

  • Deadline nears for Freedom Forum's International Journalists-in-Residence program

    Applications are due September 15 for the Freedom Forum's International Journalists-in-Residence Program for 1999. According to the Freedom Forum's web site, this annual program provides professional and educational opportunities for print and broadcast journalists or media managers from Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Central and South America.

  • Nominations sought for WAN Golden Pen Award 1999

    The nomination period for the 1999 Golden Pen of Freedom Award, presented by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), closes August 24, according to the IFEX Communique, issue 7-12. WAN requests that information on candidates reach the WAN secretariat by this date, supported by the fullest possible details and documentation.

  • OSCE media representative outlines plans for Balkans, Central Asia

    Events in the Balkans and Central Asia rank prominently on the autumn agenda for Freimut Duve, media representative for the Organization on Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

    Duve offered details about his fall schedule in a speech July 16 before the OSCE Permanent Council, assembled in Vienna.
