    A conference titled "The Outlook for Freedom, Privacy and Civil Society on the Internet in Central and Eastern Europe" will be held September 4-6 at Central European University Training Center in Budapest at Kerepesi ut. 87.

  • Human rights to be centerpiece of Toronto film and video festival

    December 10 marks the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On this occasion, the Greater Toronto Initiative is promoting the first Toronto Human Rights Film and Video Festival. The festival will be held at the Art Gallery of Jackman Hall, December 11-13. Canadian and international shorts, documentaries and features may be entered in the competition. Both artistic merit and human rights content are valued in selecting work for the festival.

  • Media network in the Baltic Sea' deals mainly with electronic media

    The Baltic Media Center (BMC), with funding from the Council of Europe, will hold a training seminar on the relations between the media and the courts on August 13-14 in Estonia.

    At its web site, BMC bills itself as "a media network in the middle of the Baltic Sea" because of its location on the island of Bornholm.

  • Soros plans media development center in Bulgaria

    The Media Program of the Open Society Foundation-Sofia in Bulgaria is currently working on a new initiative - setting up a Media Development Center (MDC).

    "That suggests reconstructing the Media Program into a flexible unit, designed to carry out a long-term strategy in various aspects of media development in Bulgaria," said Isabella Oronova, coordinator of the Media Program of the Open Society Foundation-Sofia.

  • Partners form Institute for Journalism in Transition

    Two advocates for democratic change across the former communist East have pooled their resources in pursuit of shared goals.

    The Institute for Journalism in Transition (IJT) arises from a partnership between the Prague-based monthly Transitions and the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR) in London. IJT combines the resources of both partners to maximize the impact of their publishing and program activity while avoiding competition.

  • Congress on CEE studies to convene in Finland

    The 6th World Congress for Central and East European Studies (ICCEES) will take place June 29-Aug. 3, 2000. The International Council for Central and East European Studies has selected Tampere, Finland, as the site for this World Congress.

  • Online publication offers a forum to young writers worldwide

    Communications and journalism students aspiring to be published writers will be able to display their talents on the Cyber-Times when it is launched in July by the City University of Hong Kong.

    Students from around the world will soon be vying to have their stories published for a large and diverse international audience, according to an announcement from the School of Journalism at Carlton University, in Ottawa, Canada.

  • Internews Russia plans event for CIS television industry

    Internews Russia is one of the hosts of the Intergovernmental Teleforum of CIS Nations, to be held in Moscow from August 18 through 23. The forum is called "For a New Time - New Television!"

    Items on the forum's program include the market for television programs in CIS and Baltic countries, a contest for CIS and Baltic television programs, an exhibit of film and television equipment, a technical solutions contest and meetings with TV program writers and actors.

  • Scottish conference to examine state of journalism in CEE countries

    The forces that are transforming post-communist Central and Eastern Europe are also exerting tremendous influence on the roles of the news media and individual journalists. These forces are economic and technological as well as political.

    These changes will be examined during a conference titled "The Profession of Journalism in a Democratic Society: East-West Perspectives." It is scheduled for September 4-5 at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
