  • Lithuanian journalists enjoy public trust, poll shows

    The Lithuanian public's trust in the news media stands at a record high of 81 percent, a recent poll shows.

    Baltijos Tyrimai (Baltic Surveys), a British-Lithuanian polling firm, says its latest figures on public trust of the media represent a surge of 6 percentage points since March.

  • Fund supports investigative journalists working independently

    The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) of Annandale, Virginia, in the United States gives grants of $500 to $3,000 to reporters "working outside the protection and backing of major news organizations." FIJ says the grants "are limited to journalists seeking help for investigative pieces involving corruption, malfeasance, incompetence and societal ills in general, as well as for media criticism." There is no application form. The applicant must write a letter outlining the story.

  • Study considers media role in conflict resolution

    The European Institute for the Media (EIM) is continuing research on Media and Intra-state Conflict in Macedonia by Risto Lazarov, the general manager of Telma TV, a private television station in the Macedonian capital, Skopje. Media and Intra-state Conflict is an international research project carried on at the Institute with the support of the European Cultural Foundation in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The study examines the media's role in the structure of intra-state conflict, and it aims to suggest ways the media can contribute to conflict resolution.

  • Romanian Journalists Visit U.S., Offer Views on the State of Their Profession

    By Robert Tinsley When Alina Mungiu-Pippidi became news department chief at Romanian Television, she discovered that her office was equipped with a special telephone line.

    Dignitaries including top national officials kept the hot line to Mungiu-Pippidi's office busy with their criticisms of Romanian public television. The TV channel is the only one that can be seen in all parts of the country, Mungiu-Pippidi said.

  • Nominees sought for Rolls-Royce broadcasting awards

    Nominations for the Rolls-Royce Awards for Broadcasting Excellence will be accepted until April 2, 1999. All members of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA), full or affiliate, may apply for the second annual honors.

    The three awards recognize cost effective engineering, effectiveness in training, and innovation in management. The 1998 engineering award went to the to the Radio Corporation of Singapore.

  • Ethiopian Media Fellowship candidates sought

    The DeWitt Wallace Center for Communications and Journalism at Duke University will award fellowships to three Ethiopian journalists to study at Duke University in the United States for four weeks from March 21 to April 16, 1999.

    The competition for the Ethiopian Media Fellowship is open to all public- or private-sector Ethiopian journalists living and working in Ethiopia. The program includes seminars with other journalists to discuss topical issues, and trips to major U.S. media companies.

  • GrИmah Boucar and Ruth Simon win CPJ International Press Freedom Award

    Five journalists will receive the Committee to Protect Journalists' (CPJ) International Press Freedom Awards in New York on November 24 for demonstrating courage and independence in their reporting despite threats to them and their families, CPJ announced.

  • Angolan journalists seek help for project on human rights and democracy

    Date: 12/16/98

    Sebastiao Marques and Edgar Quinquino, two experienced reporters for the independent weekly, Agora, published in Luanda, hope to create a supplement to their newspaper that would focus on human rights and democratization.

    This supplement would be an alternative to news of war and violence--the staple of most Angolan newspapers.

  • WorldAid'98 event includes special sessions on media

    The WorldAid'98 Global Expo and Conference on Aid in Action will be held October 6-8 at Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland.

    During its second day, the conference and exposition on "The Future For Aid," will emphasize information issues with special sessions on media and crisis, disaster communications and the role of radio in development, according to the European Journalism Centre.
