  • CBA offers opportunity for advanced studies at Londonнs City University

    The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) offers an opportunity for young Commonwealth journalists to build upon their education and experience.

    The Commonwealth Broadcaster?s Bursary for 1999-2000 allows journalists from developing Commonwealth countries a chance to pursue a post-graduate diploma or a master of arts at the City University in London. Candidates should be staff employees of CBA member organizations who are working journalists.

    UNESCO is seeking nominations for its annual press freedom prize in honor of Guillermo Cano, the Colombian journalist who was slain 10 years ago in front of his newspaper's offices.

    The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize is awarded to recognize a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world.

  • An international competition of ecological films, videos in Czech Republic

    Amateur and professional filmmakers are invited to enter films on "the ecological aspects of human beings in today's world" at the 23rd annual festival, "It's Up to You Too," (IUTYT) in Uheresk? Hradi?te, Czech Republic, to be held November 24-29, according to an announcement from Klub Kultury.

  • Mediterranean journalists petition European Union for support

    Journalists from Mediterranean countries gathered at a conference in Italy to lay the groundwork for a network of journalists from the region and to petition the European Commission for assistance in creating it, according to a report from the European Journalism Centre (EJC).

    Delegates at the conference, ?Connecting Europe With Its Citizens,? held Dec. 4-5 in Matera, Italy, drafted a declaration to be sent to high officials of the European Commission and Parliament.

  • Nominations open for 1999 Louis M. Lyons Award for journalists

    Nominations are open for the 1999 Louis M. Lyons Award for conscience and integrity in journalism, offered by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, reports IFEX Clearing House. Every year, the class of Nieman Fellows honors a journalist, or a group of journalists, with the Lyons Award. The award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium, is named after the late curator of the Nieman Foundation.

    All full-time print and broadcast journalists worldwide are eligible.

  • Representatives of Poland's local press discuss financial issues

    Editors and journalists from independent local newspapers gathered in Znin, Poland, to discuss financial matters relating to newspaper production at the 13th meeting for editors of the local press.

    The private event, which was held Dec. 3-5 at the editorial offices of "Paluki," was the fourth this year for the group of about 20 representatives of Poland's local press.

  • Conference in Belgrade calls for media freedom in Yugoslavia

    The "Media for a Democratic Europe" conference in Belgrade concentrated on the new Law on Public Information and other obstacles to media freedom in Yugoslavia, according to a report from Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE).

    More than 200 people took part in the conference, organized by Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) and Radio B92, on Dec. 4-5.
