  • Company to sponsor journalist fellows at Cambridge

    Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), an international provider of business services, has announced that it will sponsor two fellowships a year on the Press Fellowship Programme offered by Wolfson College of the University of Cambridge, and journalists from Central and Eastern Europe are eligible to apply, according to a report in the newsletter Green Horizon.

  • Institute for War & Peace Reporting launches Yugoslav media monitoring bulletin

    Media Focus is a free bi-weekly e-mail bulletin devoted to analyzing the media in Yugoslavia. Media Focus is a project of the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR) in London., and is produced in collaboration with a Yugoslav research agency, Argument, and the Media Center, both of Belgrade. Media Focus intends to present a critical mirror of the performance of the Yugoslav media.

  • Bulgarian parliament bans TV ads from prime time

    The Bulgarian parliament on November 13 banned broadcasts of television advertisements during peak evening viewing hours, overruling a veto imposed by President Petar Stoyanov on a controversial media law, the European Journalism Centre (EJC) reported.

    The ban will be effective between 7 and 10 p.m. The article was the only one overruled by parliament among several that Stoyanov had vetoed.

  • Online database lists hundreds of local environmental contacts in CEE

    A new database accessible via the Internet lists more than 500 people responsible for environmental concerns in town and city governments all around the ten ?accession nations? of Central and Eastern Europe, according to the November 2 issue of Green Horizon, the newsletter of the Media Information Service (MIS) of the Regional Environmental Center (REC) for Central and Eastern Europe in Szentendre, Hungary.

  • English language monthly in Prague seeks environmental stories

    "Transitions" magazine invites writers to submit stories on environmental issues, according to Green Horizon, the newsletter of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe. Contributions from in-country authors are especially welcomed, and need not be in English.   • Commonwealth Short Story Competition opens for 1999

    Masters-or novice writers-who appreciate brevity should sharpen their writing and editing tools to craft an entry for the 1999 Short Story Competition offered by the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA). All Commonwealth citizens--amateur writers or professional--can participate in the competition. The association's goal is to promote the Commonwealth by broadcasting well-written short stories by Commonwealth writers.

    Original, English-language stories of about 500 words qualify for the contest.

  • IFJ seeks international assistance for Serbian independent media

    In recent weeks newspapers and radio stations have been closed by the authorities in Serbia, putting more than 400 journalists out of work. Harassment has reached its severest level since the government introduced a new information law October 20, making it easier to prosecute media that displease authorities.

  • Internet publication seeks contributors

    Orato, a network of contributors, is looking for writers, photographers and videographers from around the world to join its network. Orato will pay for first-person stories from professional or amateur writers. Orato considers itself to be part magazine, part talk show, part town meeting and an alternative to the big media and says it has more than 2,000 correspondents around the world.

  • Mott Foundation funds environmental journalism program in Hungary, Poland

    Among the unfortunate legacies of the communist era is severe environmental damage in the countries that were affiliated with the Soviet camp.

    To better equip journalists to inform the public about environmental issues, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation is financing four workshops to be held in Hungary and Poland during November.

  • Baltic Media Centre rounds out schedule of training for 1998

    The Baltic Media Centre closes out the year 1998 with courses for broadcast journalists from the region in investigative journalism, production of radio programs for young people, basic skills for young journalists and television management for producers.

    Broadcast journalists will cultivate their skills in investigative journalism in a weeklong course, November 15-21.
