  • ICFJ honors outstanding international journalists at awards dinner

    The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) honored veteran British-American journalist Alistair Cooke, Bulgarian investigative reporter Anna Zarkova, and Peruvian magazine editor Enrique Zileri Gibs?n for their outstanding contributions to international journalism at ICFJ's first Excellence in International Journalism Awards Dinner on October 14 in Washington, D.C.

  • Media institute monitors coverage of Macedonian elections

    The European Institute for the Media (EIM) has completed the first part of its mission monitoring the coverage of Macedonia?s parliamentary election campaign. Monitoring began October 1 and continued until October 16, and is scheduled to resume October 25 through November 1. The project is carried out with co-financing from the European Commission, EIM reported.

    The analysis embraces 16 media outlets, both print and broadcast, that are based in Skopje, Tetovo, Stip and Kumanovo.

  • Program to help journalists understand European issues, events

    Introduction to the European Institutions is a program that the European Journalism Centre (EJC) at Maastricht has designed in cooperation with the European Commission. It aims to help journalists understand European issues and events. The program consists of seminars and visits and is sponsored by the commission?s national offices and official delegations, EJC reported.

    The program can be of flexible duration, and the content can be varied to meet individual requirements. The level can be introductory or advanced.

  • Film highlights Hungarian

    Recently the Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ) in Budapest organized a public show and a debate of the film "Our Telehouse," produced for broadcast by local and national television stations in Hungary and abroad.

    "Our Telehouse" is a 30-minute documentary about the "telehouse" movement in Hungary. In the villages, telehouses offer access to sophisticated computer technology and trainers who can teach people to use it.

  • Measure advances deregulation of South African broadcasting

    A bill passed in early November is to transform the South African Broadcasting Corp. (SABC) into a limited liability company, with the state as the sole shareholder, according to a BBC report.

    The measure marks another phase in the deregulation of post-apartheid broadcasting with the new SABC charter closely modeled on the BBC's charter. The bill, part of continuing deregulation of SABC, will repeal the Broadcasting Act of 1976 and will divide the company into two services, public and commercial.

  • Broadcast experts offer solutions for Africa at conference

    More than 250 delegates from across Africa gathered in Abuja, Nigeria, in the second week of November for Africast?98. They considered the role of broadcasting in developing the continent and its people, and concluded that the profession was endangered in many ways, according to a report in the Nigeria Media Monitor, published by Independent Journalism Center (IJC) in Lagos, Nigeria.

    The theme of the conference, organized by the National Broadcasting Commission, was ?Broadcasting and Human Development in Africa.?

  • African journalists trained for coverage of Rwandan genocide trials in Tanzania

    A dozen Francophone journalists recently completed training in the intricacies of trial coverage during a two-week program organized by the Hirondelle Foundation of Switzerland.

    The journalists were trained specifically for coverage of proceedings of the International Criminal Tribunal on Rwanda, which are under way in Arusha, Tanzania. The United Nations established the tribunal to try suspects in the 1994 Rwandan genocide during which at least half a million ethnic Tutsis and moderate ethnic Hutus were slaughtered.

  • Hundreds of Estonian, Latvian journalists to benefit from training program

    Hundreds of journalists from Estonia and Latvia are expected to receive training in various aspects of their profession under a program funded by the European Union?s Tempus program and the Danish program Baltic Educational Island, according to a report from the Baltic Media Centre (BMC) of Denmark.

    A pledge of 800,000 ECUs from Tempus and an expected 300,000 ECUs from the Danish program (a total of about $13.1 million) will fund a postgraduate courses for 590 journalists in print and broadcast from the two Baltic cou

  • Nigeria Union of Journalists to review its constitution

    The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has completed plans for a special delegates conference in Yola, where the union's constitution is to be reviewed to accommodate amendments recommended by the Constitutional Review Committee four years ago, the Independent Journalism Centre (IJC) in Lagos reported.

    The group's national secretary, Mallam Mohammed Khalid, said the constitutional conference was set for November 19-21.

  • Yugoslav independent media, British officials reject accusation from Belgrade

    Representatives of the Yugoslav independent media and the British government rejected accusations from the Yugoslav government that the media outlets? operations are activities of the British Embassy in Belgrade.?

    Veran Matic, chairman of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), dismissed the accusation as an assault on ANEM and independent radio B92 as well as general freedoms in Yugoslavia.
