  • Article 19 seminar to teach young Balkan leaders the importance of media freedom

    In November, Article 19, The International Centre Against Censorship, plans a one-week seminar for young democratic leaders from Albania, Macedonia and Serbia, including Kosovo, as part of its Democratic Leadership Programme. The seminar is co-financed by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, and its agenda will include the right to freedom of expression and media freedom.

  • Montenegro establishes independent television station

    Date: 12/4/98

    Montenegro's president Milo Djukanovic and Democratic Party leader Zoran Djindjic announced at the beginning of December that they have agreed to launch a Yugoslav satellite TV station that reportedly will be independent, according to independent Radio B92.

    Montenegro purchased a satellite channel and will start broadcasting very soon, Djindjic told Radio B92 of Belgrade.

  • Albanians trust private televisions for news

    A survey conducted recently by the Society for Democratic Culture (SDC) in Albania showed that Albanians consider private broadcast enterprises to be more objective in their reporting and more balanced in covering the ruling and opposition forces, the Albanian Daily News reported.

    The survey was conducted during three randomly selected days in September and October. Pollsters also examined the news programming of state television, three private stations in Tirana, and one in Shijak.

  • New award to honor best European interactive publishers

    Interactive Publishing, the annual summit of online publishers held in Zurich, with international publication Europemedia.com and Swiss publisher Ringier have established the IP Top award for European interactive publishing, the European Journalism Center (EJC) reports.

  • Council of Europe to help Albanian independent media

    Date: 11/10/98

    The Council of Europe plans to aid Albanian independent media. Genc Tirana, secretary of an Albanian journalists? group, discussed a request from Albanian journalists for several training seminars during a meeting with council officials on media. In addition to training, council officials told Tirana and other members of an Albanian delegation that the council would also supply technical equipment such as computers and other needed items for Albanian independent media.

  • New information law further restricts Yugoslav media

    The Serbian Parliament on October 21 adopted a new information law that critics say further restricts independent media and leads the country back to dictatorship, according to a report from the Associated Press.

    Serbian media face fines of up to $82,000 if they are considered to have harmed constitutional order or the national interest, an amount that would force most news organizations to close.

  • An international competition of ecological films, videos in Czech Republic

    Amateur and professional filmmakers are invited to enter films on " the ecological aspects of human beings in today's world" at the 23rd annual festival,"It's Up to You Too," (IUTYT) in Uhereske Hradi?t?, Czech Republic, to be held November 24-29, according to an announcement from Klub Kultury.

    Accepted films will be presented, judged and eligible for prizes. First prize is 10,000 Czech crowns.

  • OSCE media representative outlines plans for Balkans, Central Asia

    Events in the Balkans and Central Asia rank prominently on the autumn agenda for Freimut Duve, media representative for the Organization on Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

    Duve offered details about his fall schedule in a speech July 16 before the OSCE Permanent Council, assembled in Vienna.

  • Albanian lawmakers adopt new electronic media law

    Albanian lawmakers passed a new electronic media law that is to take effect October 15, according to the Albanian Daily News.

    The draft was prepared by the parliaments media commission.
