  • Journalists' group seeks solution to Balkan tension

    Date: 10/10/98

    The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) plans a visit to Macedonia for its members, October 7-11. The trip is scheduled in advance of parliamentary elections October 18. The goal is to seek solutions to Balkan tensions.

    The schedule of events includes visits and interviews with Macedonian politicians and U.N. officials as well as a party rally. Journalists who are interested in economic matters may meet with heads of major companies, the Chamber of Commerce and the agency for privatization.

  • A new School of Journalism in Sarajevo

    The School of Journalism in Sarajevo opened its doors on October 5 and quickly secured a grant to help ensure its future, according to spokespersons from the European Commission in Brussels.

    The commission on October 8 approved 35 projects of support for the independent media in the countries of former Yugoslavia valued at approximately ECU 8.58 million ($9.76 million), according to a report from the European Journalism Center (EJC).

    Poland will be the site of an ethnic television festival and a seminar for young journalists who deal with ethnic minority issues in October.

  • Yugoslavia’s first independent newspaper distribution network is launched

    Date: 7/16/98

    TransPress put an end to the Yugoslav state monopoly on newspaper distribution when the Belgrade-based company commenced operations in mid-July, according to reports from UNESCO and WAN.

    UNESCO, which set up the company, and the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), which oversees Trans Press on-site implementation, on July 16 announced the ventures launching. The governments of Germany, Norway and Switzerland provided start-up funding.

  • Albanian lawmakers approve new electronic media law

    According to the Albanian Daily News, Albanian lawmakers and media experts gave the finishing touches to a new electronic media law on June 17 and the bill is now being examined by legal and finance experts before being sent to a parliamentary media committee for final consideration.

  • Soros plans media development center in Bulgaria

    The Media Program of the Open Society Foundation-Sofia in Bulgaria is currently working on a new initiative - setting up a Media Development Center (MDC).

    That suggests reconstructing the Media Program into a flexible unit, designed to carry out a long-term strategy in various aspects of media development in Bulgaria, said Isabella Oronova, coordinator of the Media Program of the Open Society Foundation-Sofia.
