  • Health and media trainings open to South Pacific journalists

    The Commonwealth Health and Media Partnership is conducting two training sessions on health coverage for journalists in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

    The first of the Health and Media courses was scheduled for January 9 to January 13 in Port Vila, for journalists in Vanuatu. The same course is to be conducted again from January 23 to January 27 in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

  • New initiative to bring 100 journalists to U.S. for training

    The U.S. government and six universities are cooperating on a new program that will bring 100 journalists from around the world to the country for study and training.

    Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced the launch of the Edward R. Murrow Journalism Fellows Program on December 13. The fellows will train for three weeks in April at their respective host universities, which will develop special curricula for the journalists.

  • New initiatives seek to protect journalists’ health

    Gymnasiums in the workplace, blood-pressure monitoring, and quality-of-life surveys are a few of the initiatives being developed in Brazil to help alleviate persistent stress in newsrooms.

    Since December, employees at TV Gazeta and Gazeta Esportiva, which belong to the Casper L?bero Foundation, have participated in a workout program. The program consists of daily workouts, especially useful in a stressful environment like a fast-paced and competitive newsroom.

  • Fellowships for global health reporting course at Harvard

    Journalists who want to improve their health reporting by deepening their expertise have a new opportunity available. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has granted US$1.19 million to the Nieman Foundation for a new fellowship program at Harvard University in Boston.

    The Nieman Fellowships in Global Health Reporting will begin in the 2006-2007 academic year. Application deadline: January 31.
