  • Veteran business reporters can take course in Johannesburg

    Experienced South African journalists can study pan-African trade, public finance, and the intricacies of budget reporting at an upcoming course, scheduled for February 6 to 10 in Johannesburg.

    The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) is organizing the course, which will combine lectures, practical exercises, and open question-and-answer sessions. Two of the five days will be spent on budget reporting. Two former Reuters journalists will lead the course.

  • Al-Jazeera center offers variety of training in 2006

    A journalism training center run by the popular Al-Jazeera news channel has released its 2006 course calendar. Much like last year, the center is offering a wide variety of courses for journalists who can afford tuition.

    The Al-Jazeera Media Training and Development Center offers courses taught by experienced trainers, through a contract with the U.K.-based Thomson Foundation. Since it opened nearly two years ago, the center says, more than 2,500 journalists have participated in more than 170 training courses.

  • Few spots open for Lagos training workshop

    There are still a few spaces left for Nigerian journalists to participate in a training workshop, scheduled for February 6 and 8. The workshop will focus on coverage of development, poverty and economics.

    The World Bank Institute in Washington D.C. is co-organizing the event with Media Rights Agenda in Lagos, where the workshop will take place for about 50 journalists. Project organizers hope that the training will encourage greater news coverage of development issues.

  • International award recognizes stories on small loans

    Journalists working for print or online news media have until January 15 to submit articles for an award that will honor coverage of small loans and rural poverty. The UN and the Inter Press Service News Agency (IPS) are sponsoring the competition.

    The UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) hopes the award will draw attention to programs that offer small loans – known as “microcredit.” These programs are aimed at helping poor, rural people operate small businesses.

  • Prize brings Brazilian journalists to New York City

    December 23 is the last day for Brazilian journalists to enter a competition that would send them to participate in a seminar in New York City. The international financial corporation Citigroup is sponsoring the contest, which is open to experienced print or online journalists.

    The Citigroup Journalistic Excellence Award recognizes journalists who are fluent in English and have at least five years of experience covering economics in a newspaper, magazine, news agency or Web site.

  • Business journalism contest sends one winner to New York

    Uruguayan business journalists have until December 13 to enter a journalism contest for the best economic reporting. The winner will attend an international seminar on globalization in New York City.

    The prize is organized for the fourth year in a row by the Uruguayan chapter of the Asociaci?n Interamericana de Periodistas de Econom?a y Finanzas (AIPEF). The organizers aim to encourage journalists to improve their coverage of the economy.

  • Al-Jazeera plans second international TV festival

    Satellite channel Al-Jazeera has announced details on its next international television production festival, planned for March 2006.

    The event is open to journalists and representatives of satellite channels, TV stations, production companies, and independent filmmakers. The festival, scheduled for March 27 to 30 at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha, Qatar, will feature a competition and a media exhibition.
