    High-quality news coverage of global issues such as poverty, development and human rights is eligible for two categories of a U.K.-based media competition. Submission deadline: March 3.

    The One World Media Awards, organized by One World Broadcasting Trust (OWBT), are principally for publications in the United Kingdom. However, there are two categories for international news media: The International Premier Award and the Special Award for Development Media.

  • Free expression campaigns are theme of Belgium conference

    Brussels, Belgium, will host an international conference for activists and groups that defend freedom of expression. The event, organized by the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), is scheduled for February 19 to 24.

    The conference theme: “Acting Together to Defend Free Expression.” The idea is to bring together IFEX members and partners to discuss new ways to conduct effective free-expression campaigns. The conference is not open to the general public.

  • Jordanian journalists’ group to promote free expression

    A new journalists’ group in Jordan says it aims to promote dialogue and freedom of expression, the Arabic-language Elaph.com news site reported.

  • Government closes last foreign broadcasting bureau

    Uzbekistan’s government has effectively shut down the last foreign broadcasting office in that country by denying accreditation to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

    President Islam Karimov has been reining in the press ever since May 13, when media reported on the government’s deadly crackdown on protesters in Andijan. International media watchdogs and human rights groups have tallied dozens of attacks on local and international journalists since May.

  • Online course on freedom of information offered to Africans

    A press freedom organization has teamed up with a human rights group to present an online course to help Africans campaign for better access to information. The course is scheduled for January 3 to February 21.
