Investigative Reporting Jobs

Technology is Revolutionizing Investigative Reporting Opportunities

Many of today’s investigative journalists are working across regional boundaries and cross-border networks using tools and technologies that are changing the way this kind of reporting is done. The image of the “lone wolf” journalist working alone in a corner of the world isn’t so true anymore. Investigative reporting opportunities are often collaborative efforts with those who know the terrain and the sources.

“Investigative reporting has gone global,” says David Kaplan of International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). “It is exploding to the far corners of the world, even in places you wouldn’t expect, where people can get killed for reporting the wrong thing. The important thing is that you establish a methodology – you get a generation of reporters trained in how to do this kind of reporting,” Kaplan says.

IJNet provides a wealth of expert resources to support those journalists searching for investigative reporting jobs. You’ll find tips on the latest technologies and tools being used in the field, manuals that guide you to dig deeper and expose injustice and real-life case studies written by the worlds’ foremost investigative journalists. You’ll read about challenges in specific regions, how to gather data in developing countries and how to avoid dangerous situations.

Classes and videos are hosted on IJNet about how to find story ideas and develop sources before starting to interview anyone or write anything. Investigative reporting jobs require you do your homework. Read all you can before you begin interviewing. When you finally meet the subject of your investigation, you want to be well-informed.

Each investigative journalism job is still based in the same principles and requires the same skills as it always has. IJNet articles written by those with first-hand experience can provide a framework in which you can think about your stories systematically. By refining your methods, gaining skills in new technologies and networking with others globally, you can seize investigative reporting opportunities in your area of expertise.
