    Journalists in Yemen could soon get their first look at a new, proposed press law. The government there is putting the final touches on a draft law, the Al-Bayan newspaper in the United Arab Emirates.

  • Another journalist murdered in Philippines

    A lone gunman fatally shot a radio journalist at a market in the central Philippines on December 1. It was the third killing of a journalist in two weeks, and the 10th overall in 2005, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).

  • Media and Freedom of Expression

    In Jakarta. Organized by the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO). The conference is a follow-up discussion from a similar conference held in early September in Washington, D.C. According to the invitation, the Jakarta event will update journalists on legal issues related to media and public policy. The conference is free, and it will take place at the Jakarta Media Center, Gedung Dewan Pers, ground floor, Jl. Kebon Sirih no 32-34.

  • Experienced journalists encourage youth at conference

    Experienced African reporters offered words of encouragement to young, would-be journalists attending a two-day summit for young people in Mali.

    The summit, held on December 3 and 4, is dedicated to the future of young Africans. Four veteran journalists wrote letters to the young people to encourage them into the field while also warning them of the difficulties of reporting in Africa. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) published the letters on its Web site.

  • Journalists invited to freedom of expression conference

    Indonesian journalists can participate in a conference on media and freedom of expression, scheduled for December 8 in Jakarta.

    The United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) is organizing the event, which is a follow-up discussion from a similar conference held in early September in Washington, D.C. According to the invitation, the Jakarta event will update journalists on legal issues related to media and public policy.

  • New books cover investigative reporting, media law

    Legal threats to independent media and basic tips for investigative reporters are the topics of two new books for African journalists.

    The Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Sub-Sahara Media Program released the books on November 28: “SADC Media Law: A Handbook for Media Practitioners, Volume 3” and “A Watchdog’s Guide to Investigative Reporting.” Both are available for free online, and hard copies are available for journalism organizations and schools.
