By chance I became a journalist. I was a volunteer typist for News Department during an international convention of Watchtower Society held at Rizal Coliseum, Manila, Philippines in the 1960s. I was asked by the News Director Hilarion Amores to try writing news item regarding the convention. I tried and had it edited by volunteer editor, Atty. Felipe Amores. At first, he made corrections, but crossed out the whole page. He said: “Fidel, the first paragraph should have a punch. When a dog bites a man, is it news?”
Uneducated journalist I was took it as a challenge. I compose a new article and had it edited by the volunteer associate editor, Mr. Enicola. He did few corrections and had me finalized. The next day, Sunday, final day of the convention, my story was in the back page of The Manila Times, while the other story written by one of the volunteers landed inside page.
Since that day I pursue writing. My purpose is for the public be informed with wholesome news and/or commentaries. I write constructive criticism as opinion writer for Leyte Samar Daily Express (http://leytesamardaily.net), a regional newspaper for Eastern Visayas. Writing for me is not for fame, it is a civic duty like the new discipline in journalism called Citizen Journalism. I will stop writing only when my brain stops its function.
Sorry I don't have specimen signature to affix in the internet.
I've been working the the field of journalism for 17 years...Still very interested in working further. My first opinion placed in editorial. It made me more curious, responsible than ordinary people. Being a woman journalist, it was a very hard time to do journalism from my country, Nepal. Media house and friends from it were not friendly. Society was also negative about women's issues. So I thought I should be here in journalism to open the eyes of my patriarchal society. These days we have equal rights and society is becoming positive from the women's perspective.
I will be here.

I feel most purposeful in my life when I am interviewing a person and they are able to share their story. When that story is then published in the media, I feel like I may have done a little bit of good in the world.I report on stories to do with global migration, so I interview refugees, migrant workers and immigrants. It is one of the most gratifying things I have done with my life.
Your life is purposeful and having meanings, This giving me a line of action towards my life. I actually have a sensitive heart which feels the miseries of people far more than others. I want to make that pain a voice but I dont have proper guidline. Can you help in that.
When i joined the profession it was primarily due to the fact that it would empower me to unearth some scams, especially the dark spots of society where i could hold a mirror to society. Besides, it sounded so glamorous to have my name printed in the newspaper be it a social diary or a cultural report.
I think the idea of being a journalist is appealing because it has brought fame and fortune for so many talented individuals (Hemingway, for example). But can we all be journalists if there are barely any paying jobs?
This sounds a little lofty, but it's true. When I changed careers to become a reporter, I realized that the way to get to truth, or to get as close as you can get in journalism, is to look for documents or other primary sources of objective truth. That’s what led me into investigative reporting.
Would I do it again? definitely.
Some journalists in the business say that journalism schools are failing to adapt as media moves in a digital direction. As media evolves, are journalism schools keeping up? Are journalism schools preparing aspiring writers, editors, reporters and managers for the challenges of new media? What have your experiences been in studying journalism at a university?
Civic Duty as in Citizen Journalism
